Microstrip filters for RF/microwave applications

Before the emergence of ultra-wideband (UWB) radios, widely used wireless communications were based on sinusoidal carriers, and impulse technologies were employed only in specific applications (e.g. radar). In 2002, the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) allowed unlicensed operation between 3.1–10.6 GHz for UWB communication, using a wideband signal format with a low EIRP level (−41.3dBm/MHz). UWB communication systems then emerged as an alternative to narrowband systems and significant effort in this area has been invested at the regulatory, commercial, and research levels.

Substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) technology provides an attractive solution to the integration of planar and nonplanar circuits by using a planar circuit fabrication process. However, it is usually difficult to implement the negative coupling structure required for the design of compact canonical folded elliptic or quasi-elliptic cross-coupled bandpass filter on the basis of a single-layer SIW. In this paper, a special planar negative coupling scheme including a magnetic coupling post-wall iris and a balanced microstrip line with a pair of metallic via-holes is studied in detail. Two -band fourth-degree cross-coupled bandpass filters without and with source-load coupling using the negative coupling structures are then proposed and designed. The two novel SIW filters having the same center frequency of 20.5 GHz and respective passband width of 700 and 800 MHz are implemented on a single-layer Rogers RT/Duroid 5880 substrate with thickness of 0.508 mm. Measured results of those filters, which exhibit a high selectivity, and a minimum in-band insertion loss of approximately 0.9 and 1.0 dB, respectively, agree well with simulated results.

Substrate Integrated Waveguide Cross-Coupled Filter With Negative Coupling Structure

A novel cascaded microstrip open-loop resonator filter with controllable electric and magnetic mixed coupling is presented to have one or more transmission zeros. For two coupled resonators, the coupled sides with the maximum magnetic field are combined with their open gaps with the maximum electric field, creating the electric and magnetic mixed coupling. By adjusting the distances between resonators and the positions of open gaps in a mixed coupled filter, the coupling coefficients can be changed, and controllable transmission zeros can be produced in the lower stopband, upper stopband, or both. Design and fabrication of the proposed second-and fourth-order filters show the advantages: such as a smaller number of resonators, higher rejection level, as well as asymmetrical response; moreover, the location of the transmission zeros can be precisely controlled.

A Compact Open-Loop Filter With Mixed Electric and Magnetic Coupling

A dual-band antenna matching system and a method for dual-band impedance matching are provided. The method comprises: accepting a frequency-dependent impedance from an antenna; and, selectively supplying a conjugate impedance match for the antenna at either a first and a second communication band, or a third and a fourth communication band. More specifically, the method comprises: tuning a first tuning circuit to a first frequency; and, simultaneously tuning a second tuning circuit to a second frequency. In response, a conjugate match is supplied to the antenna in the first communication band in response to the first frequency. Simultaneously, the antenna is matched in the second communication band in response to the second frequency. When the first tuning circuit is tuned to a third frequency, and the second tuning circuit is tuned to a fourth frequency, then conjugate matches are supplied for the third and fourth communication bands, responsive to the third and fourth frequencies, respectively.

System and method for dual-band antenna matching

A novel coupled negative resistance method for building a microwave active bandpass filter is introduced. Based on this method, four microstrip line end-coupled filters were built. Two are fixed-frequency one-pole and two-pole filters, and two are tunable one-pole and two-pole filters. In order to broaden the bandwidth of the end-coupled filter, a modified end-coupled structure is proposed. Using the modified structure, an active filter with a bandwidth up to 7.5% was built. All of the filters show significant passband performance improvement. Specifically, the passband bandwidth was broadened by a factor of 5 to 20. >

Microwave active filters based on coupled negative resistance method

This paper presents generalized Chebyshev microstrip filters with box-like coupling schemes. The box-like coupling schemes taken in this paper include a doublet, extended doublet, and fourth-order box section. The box-like portion of the coupling schemes is implemented by an E-shaped resonator. Synthesis and realization procedures are described in detail. The example filters show an excellent match to the theoretical responses

Microstrip Realization of Generalized Chebyshev Filters With Box-Like Coupling Schemes

A novel broad-band rat-race ring coupler with a unit element at each port and an ideal phase inverter at one of the ring arms is proposed and analyzed. Design equations based on Chebyshev equiripple functions are derived. The design curves of equal or unequal power division are also presented. Theoretical data show that the bandwidth of unequal power division with a specific return-loss value increases as the power division ratio increases or decreases from unity. For a 180/spl deg/ hybrid with equal power division (3 dB) and 15-dB return loss, the proposed rat-race ring may have a bandwidth of 4:1. Three circuits of this novel rat-race ring are realized using finite-ground-plane coplanar waveguide. The measured results match very well with the theory.

A novel broad-band Chebyshev-response rat-race ring coupler

This paper proposes an analytical method to design a dual-band Alter using the short-circuit terminated half-wavelength stepped-impedance resonator (SIR). The SIR has an advantage to easily control the first and second resonances by adjusting its structural parameters. In the proposed method, the structural parameters of the SIR are obtained analytically according to the two passband center frequencies and bandwidths of the filter. As a result, the achievable specifications of the dual-band filter can be rapidly determined. The coupling between adjacent SIRs is realized by a short-circuited stub, which is characterized as a K-inverter network. The dual-frequency transformer incorporated with the tapped-line input/output structure is used for the external coupling. Applying the analytical equations in the design process, a dual-band filter can be easily and quickly realized. More importantly, compared to the published dual-band filters, the proposed method is easier to design, especially for a relatively high-order dual-band filter. Two fourth-order and one sixth-order dual-band filters are designed and fabricated to demonstrate the proposed method.

Analytical Design of Microstrip Short-Circuit Terminated Stepped-Impedance Resonator Dual-Band Filters

This paper proposes a new microstrip slow-wave structure. The unit cell comprises a Schiffman section of meander line and a shunt open-circuited stub. No via-holes and ground-plane patterns are required. Simple design formulas can be used to obtain line parameters, such as the characteristic impedance and phase velocity. According to the analysis, the characteristic impedance and slow-wave factor of the proposed slow-wave line can be independently controlled by merely two layout parameters. The proposed uniplanar structure only requires a single-layer substrate and is simply constructed using the conventional printed circuit board manufacturing process. A branch-line and a rat-race coupler were designed and fabricated using the proposed structure to demonstrate its feasibility. Their sizes are only 8.49% and 4.87% of the conventional ones, respectively. This novel slow-wave structure should find wide applications in compact microwave circuits.
