Journal ArticleDOI

Congo Basin forest loss dominated by increasing smallholder clearing.

TL;DR: Maintaining natural forest cover in the Congo Basin into the future will be challenged by an expected fivefold population growth by 2100 and allocation of industrial timber harvesting and large-scale agricultural development inside remaining old-growth forests.
Journal ArticleDOI

Near doubling of Brazil’s intensive row crop area since 2000

TL;DR: The most spatially detailed historical record of satellite imagery available is employed to show that the area of intensive row cropping in Brazil nearly doubled from 2000 to 2014 mainly because of the repurposing of pastures rather than conversion of natural vegetation.
Journal ArticleDOI

Types and rates of forest disturbance in Brazilian Legal Amazon, 2000-2013.

TL;DR: This work uses a sample-based approach to consistently quantify 2000–2013 tree cover loss in all forest types of the region and characterize the types of forest disturbance, and provides unbiased forest loss area estimates, which confirm the reduction of primary forest clearing documented by official maps.
