Journal ArticleDOI
Near doubling of Brazil’s intensive row crop area since 2000
V. Zalles,Matthew C. Hansen,Peter Potapov,Stephen V. Stehman,Alexandra Tyukavina,A. H. Pickens,Xiao-Peng Song,Bernard Adusei,Chima Okpa,Ricardo Aguilar,Nicholas John,Selena Chavez +11 more
TL;DR: The most spatially detailed historical record of satellite imagery available is employed to show that the area of intensive row cropping in Brazil nearly doubled from 2000 to 2014 mainly because of the repurposing of pastures rather than conversion of natural vegetation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Massive soybean expansion in South America since 2000 and implications for conservation.
Xiao-Peng Song,Xiao-Peng Song,Matthew C. Hansen,Peter Potapov,Bernard Adusei,Jeffrey Pickering,Marcos Adami,André Lima,V. Zalles,Stephen V. Stehman,Carlos Marcelo Di Bella,María Cecilia Conde,Esteban J. Copati,Lucas B. Fernandes,Andres Hernandez-Serna,Samuel M. Jantz,A. H. Pickens,Svetlana Turubanova,Alexandra Tyukavina +18 more
TL;DR: For example, the authors found that between 2000 and 2019, most soybean expansion in South America was on pastures converted originally for cattle production, especially in the Brazilian Amazon, where 9% of forest loss was converted to soybeans by 2016.
Journal ArticleDOI
Global Trends of Forest Loss Due to Fire From 2001 to 2019
Alexandra Tyukavina,Peter Potapov,Matthew C. Hansen,A. H. Pickens,Stephen V. Stehman,Svetlana Turubanova,D. Parker,V. Zalles,André Lima,Indrani Kommareddy,Xiao-Peng Song,Liang Wang,Nancy L. Harris +12 more
TL;DR: In this article , the authors created the first global 30-m resolution satellite-based map of annual forest loss due to fire and matched the mapped area of forest loss to the reference area obtained using a sample-based unbiased estimator, thus enabling mapbased area reporting and trend analysis.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Global 2000-2020 Land Cover and Land Use Change Dataset Derived From the Landsat Archive: First Results
Peter Potapov,Matthew C. Hansen,A. H. Pickens,Andres Hernandez-Serna,Alexandra Tyukavina,Svetlana Turubanova,V. Zalles,Xinyuan Li,Ahmad Khan,Fred Stolle,Nancy L. Harris,Xiao-Peng Song,Antoine Baggett,Indrani Kommareddy,Anil Kommareddy +14 more
TL;DR: In this paper , the first results from a project aimed at annual multidecadal land monitoring providing critical information for tracking global progress towards sustainable development are presented, where the global 30m spatial resolution dataset quantifies changes in forest extent and height, cropland, built-up lands, surface water, and perennial snow and ice extent.
Journal ArticleDOI
Rapid expansion of human impact on natural land in South America since 1985
V. Zalles,Matthew C. Hansen,Peter Potapov,D. Parker,Stephen V. Stehman,A. H. Pickens,Leandro Parente,Laerte Guimarães Ferreira,Xiao-Peng Song,Andres Hernandez-Serna,Indrani Kommareddy +10 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors show that human impact on the continent's land surface, specifically land use conversion and natural land cover modification, expanded by 268 million hectares (Mha), or 60%, from 1985 to 2018.
