Journal ArticleDOI
Restoration of shallow lakes by nutrient control and biomanipulation—the successful strategy varies with lake size and climate
Erik Jeppesen,Mariana Meerhoff,B. A. Jacobsen,R. S. Hansen,Martin Søndergaard,J. P. Jensen,Torben L. Lauridsen,Néstor Mazzeo,Christina W. C. Branco +8 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors studied the response time to reduced nitrogen loading in shallow lakes by reducing external nutrient loading and found that in most cases, a new equilibrium with respect to total phosphorus (TP) often is reached after <10-15 years.
Journal ArticleDOI
The effects of water retention time and watershed features on the limnology of two tropical reservoirs in Brazil
Maria Carolina S. Soares,Marcelo Manzi Marinho,Vera L. M. Huszar,Christina W. C. Branco,Sandra M.F.O. Azevedo +4 more
TL;DR: In this article, physical and chemical variables were measured at four sampling sites in two reservoirs in southern Brazil, from June 2002 to June 2003, with the goal of investigating how these factors influence the limnology of tropical reservoirs.
Journal ArticleDOI
Changes in species composition during annual cyanobacterial dominance in a tropical reservoir: physical factors, nutrients and grazing effects
Maria Carolina S. Soares,M. I. de A. Rocha,Marcelo Manzi Marinho,Sandra M.F.O. Azevedo,Christina W. C. Branco,Vera L. M. Huszar +5 more
TL;DR: The present study showed that under high and constant input of nutrients, other factors, especially physical variables, present a more plausible explanation to promote changes in species composition.
Journal ArticleDOI
Limnological features of Funil Reservoir (R.J., Brazil) and indicator properties of rotifers and cladocerans of the zooplankton community
Christina W. C. Branco,Maria‐Isabel A. Rocha,Gláucia F. S. Pinto,Gisele A. Gômara,Rodrigo De Filippo +4 more
TL;DR: Species of rotifer and cladocerans are suggested as indicators that can be used to identify different physical and chemical gradients or eutrophic increases in Funil Reservoir focusing on the environmental-indicator properties of rotifers andcladocers.
Journal ArticleDOI
Eutrophication and retention time affecting spatial heterogeneity in a tropical reservoir
Maria Carolina S. Soares,Marcelo Manzi Marinho,Sandra M.F.O. Azevedo,Christina W. C. Branco,Vera L. M. Huszar +4 more
TL;DR: The tropical Funil Reservoir (Brazil) has experienced severe eutrophication in recent decades, with persistent cyanobacteria blooms as discussed by the authors, and during the course of 1 year, samples were collected at four stations along the reservoir (fluvial, intermediate and lentic compartments) to evaluate if spatial heterogeneity could affect the occurrence and distribution of these blooms along the reservoirs.
