Journal ArticleDOI
A flexible phased array system with low areal mass density
Mohammed Reza M. Hashemi,Austin Fikes,Matan Gal-Katziri,Behrooz Abiri,Florian Bohn,Amirreza Safaripour,Michael D. Kelzenberg,Emily L. Warmann,Pilar Espinet,Nina Vaidya,Eleftherios Gdoutos,Christophe Leclerc,Fabien Royer,Sergio Pellegrino,Harry A. Atwater,Ali Hajimiri +15 more
TL;DR: By combining a CMOS-based integrated circuit with flexible and collapsible radiating structures, a scalable phased array architecture can be fabricated that has an areal mass density of only 0.1 g cm−2.
Proceedings ArticleDOI
Characterization of Ultra-Thin Composite Triangular Rollable and Collapsible Booms
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors extend the range of deployed triangulation and collapseable (TRAC) boom applications by considering boom with much thinner flanges, in order to reduce the packaged volume and thus enable longer booms on small spacecraft.
Patent
Large-Area Structures for Compact Packaging
Sergio Pellegrino,Harry A. Atwater,Seyed Ali Hajimiri,Manan Arya,Christophe Leclerc,Nicolas Lee +5 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a space-based solar power station, a power generating satellite module and a method for collecting solar radiation and transmitting power generated using electrical current produced therefrom, and/or compactible structures and deployment mechanisms used to form and deploy such satellite modules and power generation tiles associated therewith are provided.
Proceedings ArticleDOI
A lightweight tile structure integrating photovoltaic conversion and RF power transfer for space solar power applications
Eleftherios Gdoutos,Christophe Leclerc,Fabien Royer,Michael D. Kelzenberg,Emily C. Warmann,Pilar Espinet-Gonzalez,Nina Vaidya,Florian Bohn,Behrooz Abiri,Mohammed Reza M. Hashemi,Matan Gal-Katziri,Austin Fikes,Harry A. Atwater,Ali Hajimiri,Sergio Pellegrino +14 more
TL;DR: A prototype lightweight (1.5 kg/m) tile structure capable of photovoltaic solar power capture, conversion to radio frequency power, and transmission through antennas is demonstrated.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mechanical properties of composite sandwich structures with core or face sheet discontinuities
TL;DR: In this article, a combination of tensile tests, three-point bending tests, compressive tests, and low velocity impact tests was used to analyze the influence of face sheet modification and core discontinuities of composite sandwich panels.
