HV composite polymeric insulators are being accepted increasingly for use in outdoor installations by the traditionally cautious electric power utilities worldwide. They currently represent -60 to 70% of newly installed HV insulators in Nortb America. The tremendous growth in the applications of non-ceramic composite insulators is due to their advantages over the traditional ceramic and glass insulators. These include light weight, higher mechanical strength to weight ratio, resistance to vandalism, better performance in the presence of heavy pollution in wet conditions, and comparable or better withstand voltage than porcelain or glass insulators. However, because polymeric insulators are relatively new, the expected lifetime and their long-term reliability are not known and therefore are of concern to users. Additionally they might suffer from erosion and tracking in the presence of severe contamination and sustained moisture. This leads to the development of dry band arcing that under certain circumstances could lead to failure of polymer insulators. In this paper a review is presented of the recent performance experience of HV composite polymeric insulators in outdoor service, testing methods, aging, the ranking of the materials, the role of fillers, the role of low molecular weight components present in the insulators, the mechanisms responsible for the loss and recovery of hydrophobicity, one of the most important properties of polymers, the mechanisms of failure, detection of faults, type and quantity of natural contaminants, effects of exposure to rain, hydrocarbons, stationary air and wind, various methods to optimize the electrical performance and a relatively new method for evaluating the performance status of polymeric insulators in the field.

Outdoor HV composite polymeric insulators

A lithographic apparatus configured to project a patterned beam of radiation onto a target portion of a substrate is disclosed. The apparatus includes a first radiation dose detector and a second radiation dose detector, each detector comprising a secondary electron emission surface configured to receive a radiation flux and to emit secondary electrons due to the receipt of the radiation flux, the first radiation dose detector located upstream with respect to the second radiation dose detector viewed with respect to a direction of radiation transmission, and a meter, connected to each detector, to detect a current or voltage resulting from the secondary electron emission from the respective electron emission surface.

Lithographic apparatus, and device manufacturing method

A variety of linear and cross-linked polysiloxanes are transformed into silicon oxide (SiOx) through the application of a recently developed room-temperature UV/ozone conversion process. Ozone and atomic oxygen, produced by exposure of atmospheric oxygen to ultraviolet radiation, remove organic portions of the polymers as volatile products and leave a thin silicon oxide surface film. The conversion rates differ for each polysiloxane studied and are related to differences in their chemical structures. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements of atomic ratios indicate that UV/ozone treatment removes up to 89% of the carbon from the resultant surface film, leading to an overall stoichiometry close to that of SiO2. The binding energy of Si(2p) core level photoelectrons shifts from 101.5 eV for the polymer precursors to about 103.5 eV after UV exposure, consistent with the formation of silicon that is coordinated to four oxygen atoms. Conversion of Some Siloxane Polymers to Silicon Oxide by UV/Ozone Photochemical Processes

Exposure apparatus exposes a substrate by irradiating the substrate with exposure light via a projection optical system and a liquid. The exposure apparatus is provided with a liquid immersion mechanism for supplying the liquid and recovering the liquid. The liquid immersion mechanism has an inclined surface, which is opposite to a surface of the substrate and is inclined with respect to the surface of the substrate, and a liquid recovering port of the liquid immersion mechanism is formed in the inclined surface. A flat portion is provided between the substrate and the projection optical system. A liquid immersion area can be maintained to be small.

Exposure apparatus, exposure method, and method for producing device

A process is provided for the formation of a thin film of gate dielectric or similar material on a silicon semiconductor substrate from an organic precursor by atomic layer epitaxy, wherein the organic precursor is introduced to react with the treated surface to form a bonded monolayer of reactive species. A second reactant is introduced to react with the surface to form the desired dielectric. After each step in the cycle, the reaction chamber is purged with an inert gas to prevent reactions except on the surface. The cycle is repeated tens to hundreds of times to achieve a desired final film thickness. No less frequently than every third cycle, the film undergoes a discrete treatment step wherein ozone is introduced into the chamber to oxidize carbon contaminants therein to form volatile products which are removed from the reaction chamber by purging with the inert gas. In a preferred embodiment where the substrate is silicon or polysilicon, a sub-monolayer of a protection material is formed by boding to silicon sites on the surface before the deposition of dielectric is begun. A preferred dielectric is gate aluminum oxide that is deposited using trimethyl aluminum as a precursor.

Method of reducing carbon contamination of a thin dielectric film by using gaseous organic precursors, inert gas, and ozone to react with carbon contaminants

Silicone-based materials for outdoor insulators have the advantage that low molecular weight (LMW) components migrate through the material and coat the surface, thereby restoring hydrophobicity over a period of hours. By measuring the IR absorption of siloxane migrating to the silicone surface through a thin carbon coating, the time constant for migration was calculated. According to the time dependence of IR-absorbance, the time constant for migration ranged from 1.6 to 5.3 h depending on alumina trihydrate (ATH) filler concentration.

Diffusion of low molecular weight siloxane from bulk to surface

Ultra thin organo-ceramic and metal oxide films are prepared under room temperature and atmospheric conditions by exposing α,ω-functional siloxane oligomers and fatty acid metal soaps, respectively, to a combination of ultraviolet light (UV) and ozone (O3). The process includes the steps of preparing ultra thin α,ω-functional polysiloxane and fatty acid metal soap films using, but not limited to, the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique. The LB technique permits construction of molecular monolayer or multilayer films on a variety of substrates. By using carboxylic acid end groups on the siloxane oligomers, metal ions can be incorporated into the SiOx film after UV-ozone exposure. This technique can be used to make electronically, optically, and chemically important organo-ceramic and metal oxide films on temperature sensitive substrates.

Ultra thin silicon oxide and metal oxide films and a method for the preparation thereof

The silicone-based coating applied to 345 kV post insulators in a substation on the shore of Long Island Sound has depolymerized over a period of about 7 years although no in-service failures have occurred. However, the increasing rate of depolymerization suggests that the coatings will have to be renewed in the near future. This paper reports comparisons of aging and material properties for a number of RTV silicone insulator coatings and measurements related to application of a new coating over an existing, field-aged coating.

Field and laboratory aging of RTV silicone insulator coatings

A modified polymer material is disclosed, including a polymer base and boehmite particles provided in the polymer base. The boehmite particles are made up of mainly anisotropically shaped particles.

Novel boehmite particles and polymer materials incorporating same

Analysis using gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy (GC/MS) was performed for evaluation of surface degradation of silicone insulating materials. Silicones are used as coatings for porcelain insulators and shed material for high voltage composite insulators. A comparison between virgin silicone rubber and aged silicone rubber samples, which were aged either on actual power lines or during a field exposure test, was made by GC/MS analysis. The GC/MS spectrum of siloxane in silicone rubber has a series of peaks which corresponds to the number of dimethylsiloxane units in the molecule. We found that the aged samples had a larger concentration of low molecular weight siloxane species than the virgin samples. The top shed surfaces generated more low molecular weight siloxane species than the bottom shed surfaces. Since GC/MS analysis can determine the molecular weight distribution of polymer insulating materials, evaluation of the degree of surface degradation and estimation of the remaining life of insulators may be possible.
