Lithium-ion batteries are playing important roles as energy storage solutions for portable devices, automotive electronics, and renewable energy systems. In order to maximize the performance of lithium-ion batteries, an advanced rapid-charging pattern is required. In this paper, a Taguchi-based algorithm is presented. Orthogonal arrays are implemented to determine the optimal rapid-charging pattern for multistage constant-current (CC)-charging method. Experimental results show that the obtained rapid-charging pattern is capable of charging lithium-ion batteries to 75% capacity in 40 min. The obtained pattern also provides 60% more cycle life than the conventional CC-constant-voltage method.

Development and dynamic modelling of a flexure-based Scott-Russell mechanism for nano-manipulation

Precision positioning systems with large working stroke (millimeter or more) and micro/nano-scale positioning resolution are widely required in both scientific research and industries. For this kind of applications, piezoelectric materials based actuators show unique advantages and have been widely employed. To overcome the demerit of the limited working stroke for single piezoelectric element, various stepping motion principles have been proposed in the past years, and accordingly, stepping piezoelectric actuators with various structures have been designed and evaluated. This review is aimed to summarize the recent developments and achievements in stepping piezoelectric actuators with large working stroke. Especially, the emphasis is on three main types of stepping piezoelectric actuators, i.e., inchworm type, friction-inertia type, and parasitic type. The motion principles of these three types of piezoelectric actuators and the corresponding developments of various actuators are discussed respectively, followed by pointing out the existing problems in these three types of piezoelectric actuators and proposing some potential research directions in this topic. It is expected that this review is helpful for relevant researchers to understand stepping motion principles as well as piezoelectric actuators, and to successfully select and design stepping piezoelectric actuators for specific applications.

Stepping piezoelectric actuators with large working stroke for nano-positioning systems: A review

This paper presents the control performance of a high-precision positioning table using the hybrid actuators composed of the piezoelectric (PZT) actuators and voice-coil motors (VCMs). The combined piezo-VCM actuator features two main characteristics, i.e., a large operation range due to the long stroke of VCM, and a high precision and heavy load positioning ability due to the actuation of PZT impact force. In this paper, a one-degree-of-freedom (1-DOF) experimental setup was configured to examine the control performance and the parametric identification for the VCM was performed based on the recursive-least-square (RLS) method. The control performance was effectively demonstrated by using a switching controller configured by an integral variable structure controller (IVSC) for the VCM to conduct rough position control and an impact force controller (IFC) for the PZT actuator to conduct fine position control. The experimental results showed that the positioning table having mass 881 g was successfully positioned within the positioning accuracy of 10 nm by both the forward and backward positioning processes. In the forward control, it totally took 1.253 s for the sliding table to reach the target position of 450 μm; in the backward control, it took 1.387 s for the sliding table moving from the position of 450 μm to the target position of 200 μm.

In this research, the nonlinear, double-dynamic Taguchi method was used as design and analysis methods for a high-precision positioning device using the combined piezo-voice-coil motor (VCM) actuator. An experimental investigation into the effects of two input signals and three control factors were carried out to determine the optimum parametric configuration of the positioning device. The double-dynamic Taguchi method, which permits optimization of several control factors concurrently, is particularly suitable for optimizing the performance of a positioning device with multiple actuators. In this study, matrix experiments were conducted with L9(34) orthogonal arrays (OAs). The two most critical processes for the optimization of positioning device are the identification of the nonlinear ideal function and the combination of the double-dynamic signal factors for the ideal function's response. The driving voltage of the VCM and the waveform amplitude of the PZT actuator are combined into a single quality characteristic to evaluate the positioning response. The application of the double-dynamic Taguchi method, with dynamic signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and L9(34) OAs, reduced the number of necessary experiments. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) was applied to set the optimum parameters based on the high-precision positioning process
