Electromagnetic Band Gap Structures in Antenna Engineering

Electrically small microstrip patches incorporating shorting posts are thoroughly investigated. These antennas are suitable for mobile communications handsets where limited antenna size is a premium. Techniques to enhance the bandwidth of these antennas are presented and performance trends are established. From these trends, valuable insight to the optimum design, namely broad bandwidth, small size, and ease of manufacturing, is given.

Design and performance of small printed antennas

The length of a wall-shorted rectangular patch antenna can be reduced from /spl sim//spl lambda//sub 0//4 to /spl sim//spl lambda//sub 0//8 by a simple folding operation, which results in a stacked shorted-patch (S-P) structure with a resonant frequency that can be controlled by modifying the distance between the stacked (lower and upper) shorted-patches. A theoretical analysis based on a simple transmission-line model is presented and compared with numerical simulations, showing good agreement if the height of the folded patch is much smaller than the patch length. The physical insight of the variation of the resonant frequency for this reduced-size antenna can be understood by considering the antenna as a shorted patch loaded with a capacitor. An experimental verification is carried out for a 15 mm/spl times/15 mm/spl times/6 mm folded S-P antenna prototype designed for the 2.4 GHz ISM band that can achieve a 10-dB return loss bandwidth of 4% and results in a nearly omni-directional radiation pattern.

Development and analysis of a folded shorted-patch antenna with reduced size

An analytical theory for the eigenfrequencies and eigenmodes of shorting-post microstrip antennas (MPA's) is presented. These antennas are seen as promising candidates for miniaturized mobile telecommunication handsets. In particular, it is shown that the zero mode of the unloaded MPA plays a central role for reducing the lowest operation frequency of the loaded MPA. The theory allows a complete calculation of all relevant antenna parameters and can easily be extended to the case of multiple shorting posts. Applications to the examples of rectangular and circular shorting post MPA's are illustrated.

Theory of miniaturized shorting-post microstrip antennas

A miniature aperture-coupled microstrip antenna of very high permittivity designed at 1.66 GHz is described. Superstrates of appropriate thickness are added on the substrate for gain enhancement. Its size is dramatically reduced and the electrical performance remains almost the same as compared with the conventional microstrip antenna of low dielectric constant. Experimental data for the return loss, radiation pattern and measured antenna gain are presented to validate the design.
