DC–DC converters with voltage boost capability are widely used in a large number of power conversion applications, from fraction-of-volt to tens of thousands of volts at power levels from milliwatts to megawatts. The literature has reported on various voltage-boosting techniques, in which fundamental energy storing elements (inductors and capacitors) and/or transformers in conjunction with switch(es) and diode(s) are utilized in the circuit. These techniques include switched capacitor (charge pump), voltage multiplier, switched inductor/voltage lift, magnetic coupling, and multistage/-level, and each has its own merits and demerits depending on application, in terms of cost, complexity, power density, reliability, and efficiency. To meet the growing demand for such applications, new power converter topologies that use the above voltage-boosting techniques, as well as some active and passive components, are continuously being proposed. The permutations and combinations of the various voltage-boosting techniques with additional components in a circuit allow for numerous new topologies and configurations, which are often confusing and difficult to follow. Therefore, to present a clear picture on the general law and framework of the development of next-generation step-up dc–dc converters, this paper aims to comprehensively review and classify various step-up dc–dc converters based on their characteristics and voltage-boosting techniques. In addition, the advantages and disadvantages of these voltage-boosting techniques and associated converters are discussed in detail. Finally, broad applications of dc–dc converters are presented and summarized with comparative study of different voltage-boosting techniques.

Step-Up DC–DC Converters: A Comprehensive Review of Voltage-Boosting Techniques, Topologies, and Applications

The major consideration in dc-dc conversion is often associated with high efficiency, reduced stresses involving semiconductors, low cost, simplicity and robustness of the involved topologies. In the last few years, high-step-up non-isolated dc-dc converters have become quite popular because of its wide applicability, especially considering that dc-ac converters must be typically supplied with high dc voltages. The conventional non-isolated boost converter is the most popular topology for this purpose, although the conversion efficiency is limited at high duty cycle values. In order to overcome such limitation and improve the conversion ratio, derived topologies can be found in numerous publications as possible solutions for the aforementioned applications. Within this context, this work intends to classify and review some of the most important non-isolated boost-based dc-dc converters. While many structures exist, they can be basically classified as converters with and without wide conversion ratio. Some of the main advantages and drawbacks regarding the existing approaches are also discussed. Finally, a proper comparison is established among the most significant converters regarding the voltage stress across the semiconductor elements, number of components and static gain.

Survey on non-isolated high-voltage step-up dc–dc topologies based on the boost converter

In this paper, a novel high step-up dc/dc converter is presented for renewable energy applications. The suggested structure consists of a coupled inductor and two voltage multiplier cells, in order to obtain high step-up voltage gain. In addition, two capacitors are charged during the switch-off period, using the energy stored in the coupled inductor which increases the voltage transfer gain. The energy stored in the leakage inductance is recycled with the use of a passive clamp circuit. The voltage stress on the main power switch is also reduced in the proposed topology. Therefore, a main power switch with low resistance $R_{{\rm DS} ({\rm ON})}$ can be used to reduce the conduction losses. The operation principle and the steady-state analyses are discussed thoroughly. To verify the performance of the presented converter, a 300-W laboratory prototype circuit is implemented. The results validate the theoretical analyses and the practicability of the presented high step-up converter.

A Novel High Step-up DC/DC Converter Based on Integrating Coupled Inductor and Switched-Capacitor Techniques for Renewable Energy Applications

High-step-up, high-efficiency, and cost-effective dc–dc converters, serving as an interfacing cell to boost the low-voltage output of renewable sources to the utility voltage level, are an important part in renewable energy systems. Over the past few years, there has been a substantial amount of studies devoted to high-step-up dc–dc converters. Among them, the category of coupled-inductor boost converters is widely researched and considered to be a promising solution for high-step-up applications. In this paper, these converters are categorized into five groups according to the major topological features. The derivation process, advantages, and disadvantages of these converters are systematically discussed, compared, and scrutinized. This paper aims to provide an introduction, review, and framework for the category of high-step-up coupled-inductor boost converters. General structures for the topologies are proposed to clarify the topological derivation process and to show potential gaps. Furthermore, challenges or directions are presented in this paper for deriving new topologies in this field.

Overview of High-Step-Up Coupled-Inductor Boost Converters

A high-voltage-gain dc–dc converter is introduced in this paper. The proposed converter resembles a two-phase interleaved boost converter on its input side while having a Dickson-charge-pump-based voltage multiplier (VM) on its output side. This converter offers continuous input current, which makes it more appealing for the integration of renewable sources like solar panels to a 400-V dc bus. Also, the proposed converter is capable of drawing power from either a single source or two independent sources. Furthermore, the VM used offers low voltage ratings for capacitors that potentially leads to size reduction. The converter design and component selection have been discussed in detail with supporting simulation results. A hardware prototype of the proposed converter with ${V}_{\rm{in}}= \rm{ 20}$ and ${V}_{\rm{out}}= \rm{ 400}$ V has been developed to validate the analytical results.

A High-Voltage-Gain DC–DC Converter Based on Modified Dickson Charge Pump Voltage Multiplier

The high-voltage gain converter is widely employed in many industry applications, such as photovoltaic systems, fuel cell systems, electric vehicles, and high-intensity discharge lamps. This paper presents a novel single-switch high step-up nonisolated dc-dc converter integrating coupled inductor with extended voltage doubler cell and diode-capacitor techniques. The proposed converter achieves extremely large voltage conversion ratio with appropriate duty cycle and reduction of voltage stress on the power devices. Moreover, the energy stored in leakage inductance of coupled inductor is efficiently recycled to the output, and the voltage doubler cell also operates as a regenerative clamping circuit, alleviating the problem of potential resonance between the leakage inductance and the junction capacitor of output diode. These characteristics make it possible to design a compact circuit with high static gain and high efficiency for industry applications. In addition, the unexpected high-pulsed input current in the converter with coupled inductor is decreased. The operating principles and the steady-state analyses of the proposed converter are discussed in detail. Finally, a prototype circuit is implemented in the laboratory to verify the performance of the proposed converter.

A High Voltage Gain DC–DC Converter Integrating Coupled-Inductor and Diode–Capacitor Techniques

Due to nonlinear time-varying characteristic of a single-phase dc/ac inverter, its front-end dc/dc converter tends to draw an alternate current ripple current at twice the output frequency, which may cause interaction issues, e.g., stability problem and input ripple current limit in distributed generation systems. A novel method is proposed to evaluate the behavior of low-frequency input current ripple. This approach is based on back current gain Ai (s) (input current to output current) model of the dc/dc converter. The theoretic model with different control schemes is verified in Saber environment. It is indicated and proved that the average current mode control strategy is more effective as compared with linear voltage mode control and open-loop control schemes. Design principles are presented based on Ai (s) as guidelines. Dynamic response with bandwidth limitation is also discussed and improved with proposed proportional-resonant (PR) filter placed based on Ai (s) model. Detail simulation and experiment results for different linear control and nonlinear control strategies, 50 and 400 Hz, buck-type stand-alone two-stage single-phase systems are provided to verify the proposed back current gain model and PR-filter solutions.

Steady-State and Dynamic Input Current Low-Frequency Ripple Evaluation and Reduction in Two-Stage Single-Phase Inverters With Back Current Gain Model

The invention relates to a method for inhibiting two-stage type orthogonal inverter input current low-frequency impulse. The method comprises the steps of introducing a resonance controller (4) via a voltage regulator (3) of a preceding stage direct-current converter (2), outputting reference command signals of the current regulator (5) via the resonance controller, outputting modulated signals by the current regulator, generating PWM high-frequency pulse signals compared with the carrier signals via a PWM signal generator (6), and finally generating power tube control signals of the preceding direct-current converter by a logic control and driving circuit (7), wherein the resonance controller (4) consists of an operational amplifier (OP), resistors (R1), (R2), (R3) and (R4), and capacitors (C1), (C2) and (C3). The method has the advantages of 1) effectively inhibiting two-stage type orthogonal inverter input current low-frequency impulse, 2) ensuring simple control loop and 3) effectively reducing influence on the service life of power supplies such as storage battery and fuel battery serving as the preceding stage input direct-current power supply.
