Journal ArticleDOI
Genetic relatedness of hemagglutinins of the H1 subtype of influenza a viruses isolated from swine and birds
TL;DR: The hemagglutinin (HA) gene of the influenza virus subtype H1N1 isolated from pigs and birds has been analyzed by the hybridization technique and the results are consistent with the view that H 1N1 viruses can be transmitted from birds to pigs and/or vice versa.
Journal ArticleDOI
The evolving history of influenza viruses and influenza vaccines
TL;DR: The history of influenza vaccine and the associated technology shows how the vaccine has evolved to match the evolution of influenza viruses.
Journal ArticleDOI
Antigenic and genetic analyses of h1n1 influenza a viruses from european pigs
Ian H. Brown,Stephan Ludwig,C W Olsen,Claude Hannoun,Christoph Scholtissek,Virginia S. Hinshaw,P. A. Harris,John W. McCauley,I Strong,D J Alexander +9 more
TL;DR: Phylogenetic analysis of the HA gene revealed that classical swine viruses from European pigs are most similar to each other and are closely related to North American swine strains, whilst the 'avian-like' swine virus cluster with avian viruses.
Journal ArticleDOI
Influenza vaccination in 22 developed countries: an update to 1995.
David S. Fedson,Yoshio Hirota,Hak-Kyoon Shin,Pierre-Etienne Cambillard,James Kiely,F. Ambrosch,Claude Hannoun,Jane Leese,M. J. W. Sprenger,Alan W. Hampson,Klaus Bro-Jørgensen,Ann-Marie Ahlbom,Hanne Nøkleby,Martti Valle,Olafur Olafsson,Francisco Salmerón,Jann Cloetta,Helena Rebelo de Andrade,René Snacken,Isabella Donatelli,Lance C. Jennings,Raymond A. Strikas +21 more
TL;DR: In all 22 countries, higher levels of vaccine use were associated with vaccination reimbursement programs under national or social health insurance and were not correlated with different levels of economic development.
Journal ArticleDOI
Influenza vaccination in 18 developed countries, 1980-1992.
David S. Fedson,Claude Hannoun,J Leese,M. J. W. Sprenger,A W Hampson,Klaus Bro-Jørgensen,A M Ahlbom,H Nøkelby,Martti Valle,O Olafsson +9 more
TL;DR: A better understanding of why the use of influenza vaccine varies among countries will be important if its protective benefits are to be fully realized.
