What We Owe To Each Other.

There is a line of continuity between the claims made by Stuart Hall and his colleagues in their classic Policing the Crisis (1978) and Jonathan Simon’s widely referenced Governing through Crime (2008). Both publications argue that law and order has become a prominent feature of social and political life and an increasingly central part of the state’s strategy for governing civil society. Both publications see the growing focus on crime control as a moral panic and argue that a focus on crime, victimisation and fear of crime allows the state to engage in new and extended forms of hegemonic control (Brown 2008). Both publications aim to provide an ostensibly radical attack on claims by the state and of realist and other criminologists that tackling crime and victimisation are an intrinsically positive objective. The difference between the two approaches is, however, that when Hall and his colleagues were writing these claims had a certain validity, while by the time Simon was developing his ‘governing through crime’ thesis there had been a move away from a law and order society, involving a significant shift in the culture of control.

In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the provision of formal coach education. However, research has repeatedly demonstrated how coach education has had a limited impact on the learning and development of coach practitioners. To date however, these investigations have avoided female coach populations. Ten women football coaches who had recently completed various association football coach education courses participated in this study. Following the interpretive analysis of 10 semi-structured interviews the findings revealed high levels of gender discrimination and inappropriate cultural practice. The women's experiences are discussed in line with the Bourdieuian notions of social acceptance, symbolic language and power. The women coaches provided a number of recommendations for future coach education provision, which in turn, may help to improve the experiences for those women who participate in the coach education process.

"Why Am I Putting Myself through This?" Women Football Coaches' Experiences of the Football Association's Coach Education Process.

Purpose: To construct a valid and reliable methodology for the development of position- specific predictors deemed appropriate for talent identification purposes within elite youth soccer in England. Method: N = 10 experts participated in a three-step modified e-Delphi poll to generate consensus on a series of generic youth player attributes. A follow up electronic survey completed by coaches, scouts and recruitment staff (n = 99) ranked these attributes to specific player- positions. Results: A final list of 44 player attributes found consensus using the three-step modified e-Delphi poll and the findings indicated that player-positional attributes considered most important at the youth phase are more psychological and technical than physiological or anthropometric. Despite ‘hidden’ attributes (e.g. coachability, flair, versatility, vision etc) finding consensus on the e-Delphi poll, there was no evidence to support these traits when associated with a specific playing position. Conclusion: For those practitioners responsible for talent recruitment, our findings may provide greater understanding of the multiple attributes required for some playing positions. However, new ecological research is required to assess the veracity of our claims.

Establishing consensus of position-specific predictors for elite youth soccer in England

Strong associations exist between physical activity (PA) levels and incidence morbidity and mortality. Evidence suggests that PA levels decline with age but incidence of sedentary behaviour is high. This paper examines the effectiveness of a PA intervention hosted by a professional football club. It explores the impact of the intervention upon mental well-being, health perceptions, and lifestyle knowledge in men often classed as hard-to-reach (HTR). Data were collected through a shortened version of the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale, and a longitudinal self-report questionnaire. Pre- and post-intervention changes were determined by a Wilcoxon signed rank test (p  <  .05). Data indicated that the intervention was successful in improving aspects of mental well-being amongst the male client group. Improving the physical and mental well-being of typically hard-to-reach men: an investigation of the impact of the Active Rovers project

Using a two-study approach, the main purpose of this case study was to explore the use of a verbal reporting methodology to better understand the thought processes of soccer talent scouts during an in-situ talent identification environment. Study 1 developed a standardized coding-scheme to examine verbal cognitions during a single soccer game. Study 2 then utilized this methodology to examine two full-time recruitment staff trained in the use of concurrent verbal reporting before undertaking a live, in-game task. Participants also participated in a debrief interview following the game. The findings of the two studies suggest that developing a verbal reporting protocol is viable, however when applied in a live-game environment it is problematic. Future research should therefore consider a modified version of this task to further explore the cognitions of scouts whilst observing and identifying potential talent.
