The COVID-19 pandemic represents a massive global health crisis. Because the crisis requires large-scale behaviour change and places significant psychological burdens on individuals, insights from the social and behavioural sciences can be used to help align human behaviour with the recommendations of epidemiologists and public health experts. Here we discuss evidence from a selection of research topics relevant to pandemics, including work on navigating threats, social and cultural influences on behaviour, science communication, moral decision-making, leadership, and stress and coping. In each section, we note the nature and quality of prior research, including uncertainty and unsettled issues. We identify several insights for effective response to the COVID-19 pandemic and highlight important gaps researchers should move quickly to fill in the coming weeks and months.

The Theory of Event Coding (TEC): a framework for perception and action planning.

As some design problems are complex, generating concepts for a complete artefact may be overwhelming for designers, especially for novices. Students often learn to use morphological analysis (MA) to decompose a problem into subcomponents, allowing them to focus on designing for more specific functions. However, generating new ideas for subcomponents remains a challenge for novices. In this study, the authors investigated an educational method combining the morphological analysis approach with a tool designed to facilitate the generation of novel, differing ideas called design heuristics (DH). The results demonstrate that adding design heuristics within morphological analysis supported students in building upon their ideas to generate concepts. These findings contribute to the knowledge about how to facilitate idea generation through supporting tools in design pedagogy and practice.

Supporting idea generation with design tools: nesting design heuristics within morphological analysis

Creative strategies play a central role in design ideation; yet, few studies have empirically tested the success of ideation strategies in engineering design. In previous work, we extracted and further developed design strategies, called “design heuristics,” to support exploration of the space of potential designs. Once integrated into an engineer’s ideation process, they serve as cognitive "shortcuts" for generating multiple, diverse, and creative ideas. In this study, professional engineers from a manufacturing company applied the design heuristics to their current work as part of a small group innovation workshop. Using design heuristics not only allowed the team to generate new solutions to their existing problems, but also to discover and define new design opportunities. Additionally, the group spent a much longer time developing multiple designs for each heuristic than individuals have in past studies [1]. Our results suggest that the combination of heuristics and group interplay may enhance diverse idea generation.

In this chapter, we will review our current work in case-based approaches to planning. Our research examines the organization and structure of episodic memory as determined by its functional role in guiding reasoning. The theoretical thrust is based upon the intuition that a large part of the reasoning process is guided by the contents and organization of events in memory. The major goal of this work is the development of functional explanations of the representational organization and conceptual vocabularies that support reasoning tasks. Our current work can be characterized in terms of three major tasks: 


Uncovering vocabularies for describing causal similarities between episodes in memory.


Examining the use of features in the access and retrieval of cases from memory.


Understanding the role of memory organization in the support of opportunistic planning and problem solving.

A Cognitive Science Approach to Case-Based Planning

This paper explores the use of heuristics as cognitive strategies invoked during the process of design. We propose new heuristics for design that provide ways to explore the problem space of potential designs, and often lead to the generation of creative solutions. We test whether Design Heuristics can be taught to novices, and whether doing so will improve the creativity of their resulting designs.
