Using telephone ads, oral histories, telephone industry correspondence, and statistical data, Fischer's work is a colorful exploration of how, when, and why Americans started communicating in this radically new manner. Studying three California communities, Fischer uncovers how the telephone became integrated into the private worlds and community activities of average Americans in the first decades of this century. Mobile media support our autonomy by connecting us to persons, content and services independently of time and place constraints. At the same time, they challenge our autonomy: We face new struggles, decisions, and pressure in relation to whether, when and where we connect and disconnect. Digital wellbeing is a new concept that refers to the (lack) of balance that we may experience in relation to mobile connectivity. This article develops a theoretical model of digital wellbeing that accounts for the dynamic and complex nature of our relationship to mobile connectivity, thereby overcoming conceptual and methodological limitations associated with existing approaches. This model considers digital wellbeing an experiential state of optimal balance between connectivity and disconnectivity that is contingent upon a constellation of person-, device- and context-specific factors. I argue that these constellations represent pathways to digital wellbeing that—when repeated—affect wellbeing outcomes, and that the effectiveness of digital wellbeing interventions depends on their disruptive impact on these pathways.

Auf Basis empirischer Befunde zur Domestizierung des Internets skizziert der vorliegende Beitrag, welche Rolle die hausliche Internetaneignung derzeit fur die Weiterentwicklung und Transformation des mediatisierten Zuhauses spielt. Die Mediatisierung des Zuhauses ist kein aktuelles Phanomen, denn auch schon vor dem Einzug von Computer und Internet war die hausliche Sphare von Medien gepragt. Zeitung, Radio, Fernsehen, auch Buch und Musik fullten bereits in den 1970er und 1980er Jahren die Wohnungen. Eine ganzlich neue Qualitat und Dimension hat das mediatisierte Zuhause aber durch den dynamischen Prozess der Digitalisierung mit seinen vielfaltigen Implikationen sowie durch die zunehmende hausliche Prasenz von digitalen Medien erhalten. Im Zentrum steht hier die Verbreitung und massenhafte Aneignung des Internets, das als multimediale Konvergenztechnologie ein breites Repertoire verschiedener Anwendungen, Funktionen und Kommunikationsmoglichkeiten in sich vereint und somit das hausliche Medienensemble nachhaltig verandert hat.

Arguing for the lasting relevance of the home as meaning-giving sphere of media communications does not seem very popular these days. With the emergence, pervasion and increased centrality of online media and mobile technologies, the research focus of many communication scholars has been aimed at mobility rather than locality, and on networks rather than places. This is mainly due to the liberation of media from their physical restrictions that has characterized the better part of media innovations in the last two decades. As a consequence, the use of media technologies is no longer bound to well-defined settings, as was common for most of the last century when the television had its permanent place in the centre of the living room, and the telephone was considered perfectly placed in the entrance hall. Nowadays, media communications of all different kinds have shifted into the public sphere, permeating a plethora of places and cultural spaces. By using devices such as smartphones and tablet PCs, people can connect to their friends and families and have access to media content and online services from anywhere in the world. This has brought about several changes for the perception and understanding of the outside world which have increasingly become subject to negotiations and customizations by the media users. It is often overlooked, however, that significant changes are also taking effect within the home.

Unser Beitrag analysiert Umgangsweisen mit dem Internet im hauslichen Alltag. Grundsatzlich mochten wir zeigen, wie Praktiken der Internetnutzung, raumliche Arrangements und hausliche Kommunikationsstrukturen interagieren. Speziell nehmen wir ein neues Spannungsfeld in den Blick: Im Zuge der fortschreitenden Integration des Internets in den hauslichen Alltag und in Verbindung mit der bislang in Deutschland ublichen Platzierung von Computer und Internet entfaltet das Medium eine fragmentierende Wirkung und stort die Kommunikation und Interaktion in der Paarbeziehung. Manche Paare reagieren darauf mit neuen Arrangements, die wiederum hausliche Alltagskulturen und auch die Funktionen anderer Medien, insbesondere die des Fernsehens, verandern.
