TL;DR: Overall, these analyses indicate that the DASS-21 would best be used as a general score of distress rather than three separate factors of depression, anxiety, and stress, in the countries studied.

An application of item response theory to psychological test development
TL;DR: The authors applied item response theory (IRT) to two scales (a positive and a negative affect scale) of a self-report test and found that the positive affect scale has items with moderate discrimination and are measuring respondents below the average score more effectively.
