The analysis of resonant-type antennas based on the fundamental infinite wavelength supported by certain periodic structures is presented. Since the phase shift is zero for a unit-cell that supports an infinite wavelength, the physical size of the antenna can be arbitrary; the antenna's size is independent of the resonance phenomenon. The antenna's operational frequency depends only on its unit-cell and the antenna's physical size depends on the number of unit-cells. In particular, the unit-cell is based on the composite right/left-handed (CRLH) metamaterial transmission line (TL). It is shown that the CRLH TL is a general model for the required unit-cell, which includes a nonessential series capacitance for the generation of an infinite wavelength. The analysis and design of the required unit-cell is discussed based upon field distributions and dispersion diagrams. It is also shown that the supported infinite wavelength can be used to generate a monopolar radiation pattern. Infinite Wavelength Resonant Antennas With Monopolar Radiation Pattern Based on Periodic Structures

Several electrically small resonant antennas employing the composite right/left-handed transmission line (CRLH-TL) are presented for integration with portable RF modules. The proposed antenna designs are based on the unique property of anti-parallel phase and group velocity of the CRLH-TL at its fundamental mode. In this mode, the propagation constant increases as the frequency decreases, therefore, a small guided wavelength can be obtained at a lower frequency to provide the small lambdag/2 resonant length used to realize a compact antenna design. Furthermore, the physical size and the operational frequency of the antenna depend on the unit cell size and the equivalent transmission line model parameters of the CRLH-TL, including series inductance, series capacitance, shunt inductance and shunt capacitance. Optimization of these parameters as well as miniaturization techniques of the physical size of unit cell is investigated. A four unit-cell resonant antenna is designed and tested at 1.06 GHz. The length, width and height of the proposed antenna are 1/19lambda0, 1/23lambda0 and 1/83lambda0, respectively. In addition, a compact antenna using a 2-D three by three mushroom like unit cell arrangement is developed at 1.17 GHz, showing that an increased gain of 0.6 dB and higher radiation efficiency can be achieved over the first prototype antenna. The same design is applied in the development of a circularly polarized antenna operating at 2.46 GHz. A 116deg beamwidth with axial ratio better than 3 dB is observed. The physical size of the proposed mushroom type small antenna and the circularly polarized antenna is 1/14lambda0 by 1/14lambda0 by 1/39lambda0 and 1/10lambda0 by 1/10lambda 0 by 1/36lambda0, respectively

Composite right/left-handed transmission line based compact resonant antennas for RF module integration

Electrically small microstrip patches incorporating shorting posts are thoroughly investigated. These antennas are suitable for mobile communications handsets where limited antenna size is a premium. Techniques to enhance the bandwidth of these antennas are presented and performance trends are established. From these trends, valuable insight to the optimum design, namely broad bandwidth, small size, and ease of manufacturing, is given.

Microstrip Patch Antennas

The theoretical limit for small antenna performance that was derived decades ago by Wheeler and Chu governs design tradeoffs for size, bandwidth, and efficiency. Theoretical guidelines have also been derived for other details of small antenna design such as permittivity, aspect ratio, and even the nature of the internal structure of the antenna. In this paper, we extract and analyze experimental performance data from a large body of published designs to establish several facts that have not previously been demonstrated: (1) The theoretical performance limit for size, bandwidth, and efficiency are validated by all available experimental evidence. (2) Although derived for electrically small antennas, the same theoretical limit is also generally a good design rule for antennas that are not electrically small. (3) The theoretical predictions for the performance due to design factors such as permittivity, aspect ratio, and the internal structure of the antenna are also supported by the experimental evidence. The designs that have the highest performance are those that involve the lowest permittivity, have an aspect ratio close to unity, and for which the fields fill the minimum size enclosing sphere with the greatest uniformity. This work thus validates the established theoretical design guidelines.

Experimental Validation of Performance Limits and Design Guidelines for Small Antennas

In this paper we have investigated techniques to improve the overall performance of shorted microstrip patch antennas. Problems with mechanical tolerances and high H-plane cross-polarized fields have been addressed and solutions proposed which can alleviate these drawbacks.
