The intention of this work is to show that European expansion not only transformed the historical trajectory of non-European societies but also reconstituted the historical accounts of these societies before European intervention. It asserts that anthropology must pay more attention to history.

Europe and the People without History

These resources are focused on qualitative research methods. They are particularly intended for those who are learning at and from workand support a University of Plymouth module, which can contribute to the University's Continual Professional Development (CPD) framework. Through this framework learners can achieve a Bachelors in Professional Developments or a Masters in Professional Development. Within the University's CPD programme the resources will be introduced and used by a tutor who will support and facilitate student learning through use of the resources. This will be in the form of blended learning; a mixture of face to face and use of these on-line resources. Information in this document and the tutor notes included within the PowerPoint presentations are intended to support the wider use and reuse of these Open Educational Resources.

In-depth Interviewing

Purpose. To evaluate the chronic consequences of stroke in terms of activity limitations, restricted participation and dissatisfaction from life, and the relationship between these variables, in stroke survivors living in the community one-year post onset.Method. A total of 56 stroke patients (mean age: 57.7) who completed an in-patient rehabilitation programme, were evaluated one-year post onset in their homes, using the following instruments: Functional Independence Measure (FIM), Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Questionnaire (IADLq), Activity Card Sort (ACS), a work questionnaire, Life-Satisfaction Questionnaire (Li-Sat 9) and the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS).Results. One year post stroke onset the mean FIM motor score was 75.88 (max score: 91), yet more than 50% of the sample still required assistance (usually mild to moderate) in dressing, bathing and use of stairs. Activities, participation and satisfaction one-year post stroke

To expand knowledge on the accessibility of higher education to students with disabilities, the study compared 170 such students in higher education institutions in Israel with 156 students without disabilities for formal achievements and overall participation in higher education. Results revealed that academic achievements of students with disabilities were almost as high as those of students without disabilities, and overall students' experiences were similar. But the two groups of students differed in areas of experiences, as did students with various disabilities among themselves. Analysis of the data indicates that students with disabilities invested more time to meet the demands of their studies, participated in fewer social and extra-curricular activities, and used computers and information technology less. Higher education institutes still have a long way to go to reduce the gap in social inclusion of students with disabilities and to adjust academic standards for their needs.

The Activity Card Sort: A Factor Analysis

Participation in leisure activities: differences between children with and without physical disabilities.

OBJECTIVE. We examined the internal consistency and construct validity of the Children�s Leisure Assessment Scale (CLASS), which measures multidimensional participation in children�s and adolescents� leisure activities. 

METHOD. The questionnaire�s content and face validity were first established, followed by a factor analysis of the CLASS�s frequency domain of the responses of 249 children and adolescents. Internal consistency was evaluated for each of the factors, and construct validity was established by examining gender differences. 

RESULTS. The factors showed acceptable levels of internal reliability (Cronbach�s a ranged from .57 to .83). We found that girls participated in significantly more self-enrichment activities and instrumental indoor activities, with greater preference. However, boys participated in significantly more games and sports activities. 

CONCLUSION. The CLASS shows good internal reliability and may be useful in the future as a clinical and research tool in occupational therapy for evaluating leisure activities among typically developing children and adolescents
