TL;DR: For example, this paper found that family support, having children, and in-prison substance abuse treatment increase optimism, while negative family influences (incarceration or drug use of family members), longer incarceration times, and a history of serious drug use reduce optimism about life after incarceration.

Sexual Minority Youth Victimization and Social Support: The Intersection of Sexuality, Gender, Race, and Victimization

TL;DR: Examination of data from three years of statewide data from heterosexual and sexual minority adolescents in grades 9–12 indicates that sexual minority youth are at increased risk for victimization, substance use, suicidality, and social isolation compared to their heterosexual counterparts and that there is very little bivariate difference within the sexual minority community.

TL;DR: The prevalence of prescription opiate misuse was significantly higher among the rural probationers; however, given the paucity of illicit opiates and relatively recent emergence of prescriptions in rural areas, rural substance abuse treatment may be ill-prepared to treat prescription opiates misuse.

The Impact of Intimate Partner Violence on Women’s Condom Negotiation Efficacy

TL;DR: Results show that IPV experiences among women significantly decreases their confidence in negotiating condom use with a partner, putting them at a higher risk of HIV infection than women who do not report having recently experienced IPV.
