Journal ArticleDOI

Spectral-clustering approach to Lagrangian vortex detection.

TL;DR: This work locates all coherent vortices in the flow simultaneously, thereby showing high potential for automated vortex tracking and illustrates the performance of this technique by identifying coherent Lagrangian vortice in several two- and three-dimensional flows.
Journal ArticleDOI

Automated detection of coherent Lagrangian vortices in two-dimensional unsteady flows

TL;DR: In this article, a fully automated procedure for the detection of closed orbits of Lagrangian vortices in large-scale velocity datasets was developed, and the power of their method on ocean surface velocities derived from satellite altimetry was illustrated.
Journal ArticleDOI

Material barriers to diffusive and stochastic transport.

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that the most observable (uniform) transport extremizers are explicitly computable as null surfaces of an objective transport tensor, and that such surfaces are extremizers of a universal, nondimensional transport functional whose leading-order term in the diffusivity can be computed directly from the flow velocity.
Journal ArticleDOI

Do Finite-Size Lyapunov Exponents Detect Coherent Structures?

TL;DR: It is proved that an FSLE ridge satisfying certain conditions does signal a nearby ridge of some Finite-Time Lyapunov Exponent (FTLE) field, which in turn indicates a hyperbolic LCS under further conditions, and further limitations of the FSLE in Lagrangian coherence detection are found.
