Journal ArticleDOI
Detection and quantification of Plectosphaerella cucumerina, a potential biological control agent of potato cyst nematodes, by using conventional PCR, real-time PCR, selective media, and baiting.
TL;DR: PC, bait, and culture methods were combined to investigate the presence and abundance of P. cucumerina from two field sites in the United Kingdom where PCN populations were naturally declining, and the results demonstrated the importance of using a combination of methods to investigate population size and activity of fungi.
Journal ArticleDOI
Nematophagous fungus Paecilomyces lilacinus (Thom) Samson is also a biological agent for control of greenhouse insects and mite pests
Żaneta Fiedler,Danuta Sosnowska +1 more
TL;DR: The fungus showed the greatest efficacy in controlling winged and wingless forms of the cotton aphid and was able to reduce a glasshouse red spider mite population by 60%.
Journal ArticleDOI
Composition and antimicrobial activity of fatty acids detected in the hygroscopic secretion collected from the secretory setae of larvae of the biting midge Forcipomyia nigra (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae)
Aleksandra Urbanek,Ryszard Szadziewski,Piotr Stepnowski,Joanna Boros-Majewska,Iwona Gabriel,Małgorzata Dawgul,Wojciech Kamysz,Danuta Sosnowska,Marek Gołębiowski +8 more
TL;DR: Mixtures of fatty and pyroglutamic acids were found to be active against almost all the bacteria except P. fluorescens and also demonstrated certain fungistatic activity against enthomopathogenic fungi.
Journal ArticleDOI
Antimicrobial activity of untypical lipid compounds in the cuticular and internal lipids of four fly species
Marek Gołębiowski,Magdalena Cerkowniak,Aleksandra Urbanek,Małgorzata Dawgul,Wojciech Kamysz,Mieczysława I. Boguś,Danuta Sosnowska,Piotr Stepnowski +7 more
TL;DR: The qualitative and quantitative analyses of untypical compounds in the cuticular and internal lipids of four dipteran species found antimicrobial activity against 18 reference strains of bacteria and fungi was determined.
Journal ArticleDOI
Laboratory trials to infect insects and nematodes by some acaropathogenic Hirsutella strains (Mycota: Clavicipitaceous anamorphs).
TL;DR: Insect and mite pathogenic species H. nodulosa localizes close to specialized aphid pathogen H. aphidis, whereas the phytophagous mite pathogens H. kirchneri and H. gregis form a separate sister clade.
