The resurgence in the use of literature in language teaching has been accompanied by an increasing number of research articles in this area. Research (in a number of second languages) has looked at the type of interactions and the type of language that arise from classroom discussions about literature, as well as at the views of teachers and learners. Importantly, the reactions that learners have to incorporating literature in their language lessons are linked to the type of approach and type of task that are used in the classroom. The paper surveys the existing research, as well as evidence from practitioners about approaches that are used and the range of works and authors that are taught.

" – Italo Calvino, Invisible Cities (Calvino 19) In the words of Italo Calvino, a twentieth-century Italian novelist, the city is a common experience. Different from any other human community, cities function as complex centers for interaction between business, politics, and the common collective. However, Richard Sennett, a scholar who studies the social experience in cities, states, " there are probably as many different ways of conceiving what a city is as there are cities. A simple definition therefore has its attractions. The simplest is that a city is a human settlement where strangers are likely to meet " (Sennett 39). Sennett believes cities are infinitely unique because cities are constantly evolving social experiments. New replaces old through architecture, technology and population growth, and cities therefore must embrace change on a day-today basis. This circulation of new and old occurs in an organic flow, adapting to the narrative imposed by the structure of both the city and the nation. Berlin, Germany is a city that embraces its ever-evolving identity. Berlin has suffered the structural devastation of two World Wars, multiple extreme, divisive political sanctions, and periods when it was considered an international pariah. Just one of these hardships could have been enough to hinder Berlin's success as a city. A brief note on The Dancer and the Body

Alfred Doblin (1878-1957) was one of the great German-Jewish writers of the 20th century, a major figure in the German avant-garde before the First World War and a leading intellectual during the Weimar Republic. Doblin greatly influenced the history of the German novel: his best-known work, the best-selling 1929 novel Berlin Alexanderplatz, has frequently been compared in its use of internal monologue and literary montage to James Joyce's Ulysses and John Dos Passos's Manhattan Transfer . Doblin's oeuvre is by no means limited to novels, but in this genre, he offered a surprising variety of narrative techniques, themes, structures, and outlooks. Doblin's impact on German writers after the Second World War was considerable: Gunter Grass, for example, acknowledged him as "my teacher." And yet, while Alexanderplatz continues to fascinate the reading public, it has overshadowed the rest of Doblin's immense oeuvre.
