Monitoring Portland cement hydration: Comparison of methods

TL;DR: In this article, various experimental methods of monitoring Portland cement hydration are compared, including quantitative X-ray diffraction analysis (QXRD), measurement of non-evaporable water as loss on ignition, thermogravimetry, conduction calorimetry and measurement of chemical shrinkage.
Journal ArticleDOI

Gradients of microstructure and diffusion properties in cement paste caused by drying

TL;DR: In this article, the microstructure of hydrated cement paste varies with distance from an exposed, drying face, and possible causes of the microstructural gradients are discussed in relation to the effects of moisture condition upon cement hydration and pore structure changes and carbon dioxide upon cement hydrates and porosity.

Influence of Curing at Different Relative Humidities on the Hydration and Porosity of a Portland/Flyash Cement Paste

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe how the curing of concrete is impaired by exposure to drying at early ages, and show that removing water from the surface layers restricts the binder reactions and pore structure development.
