Journal ArticleDOI
Bioassessment in complex environments: designing an index for consistent meaning in different settings
Raphael D. Mazor,Andrew C. Rehn,Peter R. Ode,Mark Engeln,Kenneth Schiff,Eric D. Stein,David J. Gillett,David B. Herbst,Charles P. Hawkins +8 more
TL;DR: An index based on benthic macroinvertebrates for California, USA, a region with great environmental heterogeneity is developed, evaluating index performance (accuracy, precision, responsiveness, and sensitivity) throughout the region to determine if scores provide equivalent ecological meaning in different settings.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comparing volunteer and professionally collected monitoring data from the rocky subtidal reefs of Southern California, USA
David J. Gillett,Daniel J. Pondella,Jan Freiwald,Kenneth Schiff,Jennifer E. Caselle,Craig Shuman,Stephen B. Weisberg +6 more
TL;DR: The biggest difference was in characterization of the physical habitat of the reefs, which appeared to result from selection bias of transect path by the volunteer program towards more complex structured sections of a reef.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of ecological group classification schemes on performance of the AMBI benthic index in US coastal waters.
David J. Gillett,Stephan B. Weisberg,Treda Grayson,Anna T. Hamilton,Virginia D. Hansen,Erik W. Leppo,Marguerite C. Pelletier,Ángel Borja,Donald B. Cadien,Daniel M. Dauer,Robert J. Diaz,Margaret Dutch,Jeffrey L. Hyland,Michael Kellogg,Peter F. Larsen,Jeffrey S. Levinton,Roberto J. Llansó,Lawrence L. Lovell,Paul A. Montagna,Dean Pasko,Charles A. Phillips,Chet F. Rakocinski,J. Ananda Ranasinghe,Denise Sanger,Heliana Teixeira,Robert F. Van Dolah,Ronald G. Velarde,Kathy Welch +27 more
TL;DR: The AZTI Marine Biotic Index (AMBI) requires less geographically-specific calibration than other benthic indices, but has not performed as well in US coastal waters as it has in the European waters for which it was originally developed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evaluating the adequacy of a reference site pool for ecological assessments in environmentally complex regions
Peter R. Ode,Andrew C. Rehn,Raphael D. Mazor,Kenneth Schiff,Eric D. Stein,Jason T. May,Larry R. Brown,David B. Herbst,David J. Gillett,Kevin B. Lunde,Charles P. Hawkins +10 more
TL;DR: This approach established a reference-site pool with low levels of human-associated stress and broad coverage of environmental heterogeneity, which should be widely applicable and customizable to particular regional or programmatic needs.
Journal ArticleDOI
Adaptation and application of multivariate AMBI (M-AMBI) in US coastal waters.
Marguerite C. Pelletier,David J. Gillett,Anna T. Hamilton,Treda Grayson,Virginia D. Hansen,Erik W. Leppo,Stephan B. Weisberg,Ángel Borja +7 more
TL;DR: The US M-AMBI appears to be an acceptable index for comparing condition across broad-scales such as estuarine and coastal waters surveyed by the US EPA's National Coastal Condition Assessment, and may be applicable to areas of the US coast that do not have a locally derived benthic index.
