I have developed "tennis elbow" from lugging this book around the past four weeks, but it is worth the pain, the effort, and the aspirin. It is also worth the (relatively speaking) bargain price. Including appendixes, this book contains 894 pages of text. The entire panorama of the neural sciences is surveyed and examined, and it is comprehensive in its scope, from genomes to social behaviors. The editors explicitly state that the book is designed as "an introductory text for students of biology, behavior, and medicine," but it is hard to imagine any audience, interested in any fragment of neuroscience at any level of sophistication, that would not enjoy this book. Principles of Neural Science

In the real world, a realistic setting for computer vision or multimedia recognition problems is that we have some classes containing lots of training data and many classes contain a small amount of training data. Therefore, how to use frequent classes to help learning rare classes for which it is harder to collect the training data is an open question. Learning with Shared Information is an emerging topic in machine learning, computer vision and multimedia analysis. There are different level of components that can be shared during concept modeling and machine learning stages, such as sharing generic object parts, sharing attributes, sharing transformations, sharing regularization parameters and sharing training examples, etc. Regarding the specific methods, multi-task learning, transfer learning and deep learning can be seen as using different strategies to share information. These learning with shared information methods are very effective in solving real-world large-scale problems. This special issue aims at gathering the recent advances in learning with shared information methods and their applications in computer vision and multimedia analysis. Both state-of-the-art works, as well as literature reviews, are welcome for submission. Papers addressing interesting real-world computer vision and multimedia applications are especially encouraged. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:  • Multi-task learning or transfer learning for large-scale computer vision and multimedia analysis • Deep learning for large-scale computer vision and multimedia analysis • Multi-modal approach for large-scale computer vision and multimedia analysis • Different sharing strategies, e.g., sharing generic object parts, sharing attributes, sharing transformations, sharing regularization parameters and sharing training examples, • Real-world computer vision and multimedia applications based on learning with shared information, e.g., event detection, object recognition, object detection, action recognition, human head pose estimation, object tracking, location-based services, semantic indexing. • New datasets and metrics to evaluate the benefit of the proposed sharing ability for the specific computer vision or multimedia problem. • Survey papers regarding the topic of learning with shared information.  Authors who are unsure whether their planned submission is in scope may contact the guest editors prior to the submission deadline with an abstract, in order to receive feedback.

Neural networks for control systems: a survey

Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) has recently received considerable attention in the academic community, in labs, in technology companies, and through the media. Because of this attention, it is desirable to present a survey of HRI to serve as a tutorial to people outside the field and to promote discussion of a unified vision of HRI within the field. The goal of this review is to present a unified treatment of HRI-related problems, to identify key themes, and discuss challenge problems that are likely to shape the field in the near future. Although the review follows a survey structure, the goal of presenting a coherent "story" of HRI means that there are necessarily some well-written, intriguing, and influential papers that are not referenced. Instead of trying to survey every paper, we describe the HRI story from multiple perspectives with an eye toward identifying themes that cross applications. The survey attempts to include papers that represent a fair cross section of the universities, government efforts, industry labs, and countries that contribute to HRI, and a cross section of the disciplines that contribute to the field, such as human, factors, robotics, cognitive psychology, and design.

Minimizing conflicts: a heuristic repair method for constraint satisfaction and scheduling problems

The use of telerobots in remote locations allows humans to extend their capabilities to distant and hazardous environments. Although safer for the operator, this extension of capabilities comes at a price. Due to communication across great distances, experiencing time delays of up to several seconds is common. Any time delay in the human/robot interaction can significantly degrade the effectiveness of operator control. This paper will looks at two common instances of human-in-the-loop command of robots: command of vehicle motion and command of a manipulator to perform an assembly task. Results from three studies are summarized to show the degradation in performance caused by varying levels of time delay.

Effects of time delay on telerobotic control of neutral buoyancy vehicles

In this chapter, we survey the current state of the art in space telerobots. We begin by defining relevant terms and describing applications. We then examine the design issues for space telerobotics, including common requirements, operational constraints, and design elements. A discussion follows of the reasons space telerobotics presents unique challenges beyond terrestrial systems. We then present case studies of several different space telerobots, examining key aspects of design and human–robot interaction. Next, we describe telerobots and concepts of operations for future space exploration missions. Finally, we discuss the various ways in which space telerobots can be evaluated in order to characterize and improve performance.

Space Telerobotics: Unique Challenges to Human–Robot Collaboration in Space

The focus of this article is to examine the reaction moment effect of satellite-based manipulators and to investigate the feasibility of stabilizing the base platform during arm operations. The goal is not to advance the state of the art in adaptive control, but rather to illustrate the benefits of autonomous attitude stabilization through reaction moment compensation. A derivation of vehicle body dynamics using reaction wheels and thrusters as the primary input sources is given. The modifications to the Newton-Euler method necessary to accommodate a manipulator arm with a free-flying base are then outlined. Next, a quaternion-based feedback regulator design is adopted.

The reaction stabilization of on-orbit robots

This paper summarizes a survey of on-orbit spacecraft failures since 1981. A preliminary assessment of telerobotic serviceability is also included. A comprehensive database of spacecraft launch attempts and failures was compiled from a number of open sources. The main focus of the analysis is the categorization of earth orbiting commercial, military, and scientific satellites which suffered from significant on-orbit failures. To characterize the telerobotic servicing opportunities, additional technical and economic information was also developed. Each of the candidate spacecraft failures was evaluated against a series of increasingly capable telerobotic servicer types. This analysis should enable better understanding of future applications of servicing, requirements for on-orbit servicing operations, effects of servicing on spacecraft mission assurance, and the overall question of the economic viability of on-orbit servicing. It is expected that this survey of historical failures will provide a useful starting point for future evaluations of on-orbit servicing mission models and servicing architectures.
