Sypnosis This paper reports on the experience of 28 Saudi women doctors working in Saudi Arabia. It demonstrates the problems they encountered, many of which they share with counterparts elsewhere. In addition, they have also had to deal with problems peculiar to Saudi society: a constitution and legal system that sanctions male superiority, and segregation of the sexes in all areas of life. This context affected their choice of specialty, their work alongside male colleagues, and their promotion prospects. Many had encountered what was described as a western culture at work, or in their overseas training. They valued many aspects of this, such as promotion being based on merit, but did not all expect these aspects of western culture to prevail within their own context. Despite the constraints, the older women doctors had achieved professional success and satisfaction—and the younger doctors expect professional success also.

Saudi women doctors: gender and careers within Wahhabic Islam and a ‘westernised’ work culture

The results from a survey of ACJS and ASC members show that, while generally stable over time, some significant changes in journal prestige ratings have occurred. The results also show divergences between criminologists and justicians, mainly in the ratings of lower ranked policy‐oriented journals. An unprecedented degree of concordance between the two groups was noted for the highest ranked journals. An Assessment of Criminal Justice and Criminology Journal Prestige

This study evaluates the publication productivity of faculty members in 23 programs offering doctorates in criminology, criminal justice, or a closely related discipline. The departments are ranked according to the number of journal publications and the number of pages published by faculty members from various indexes from 1986 through 1990. We create a scale of journal quality and use it to rank programs by their faculties' publication of articles in those journals. Programs also are ranked by the number of times faculty members were cited in introductory criminology and criminal justice textbooks. In the final analysis we compare a cumulation of these rankings to a cumulative ranking from previous studies. Drastic changes have occurred in the ranking of many doctoral programs during the past decade.

The workforce of a city police department is analyzedfor a period in which an affirmative action program was in operation. The goal of parity representation with the available labor force of racial minorities and women workers in the city was not realized in this police department. The problematic nature of "equality of employment" in city police agencies is further clarified by an examination of the employment situation in this department on two levels of explanation.

Racial Minorities and Women Workers in a Big City Police Department: A Case Study in the Elusiveness of Affirmative Action

Privatization is one of the most significant issues in criminal justice. Previous studies have concentrated on greater private involvement in corrections and policing, but have ignored citizens' crime commissions as a form of private sector participation in the justice system. This study examines the perceived effectiveness of the oldest and most famous citizens' crime commission in the United States-the Chicago Crime Commission. The Commission's effectiveness is measured, using data obtained through focused interviews with the top criminal justice authorities in the Chicago criminal justice system and in the Illinois legislature. Overall, the Commission was given high ratings on the criteria utilized to measure effectiveness. A high degree of similarity was discovered in the ratings of decisionmakers in city and county criminal justice agencies.
