Genesis, classification, and evaluation method of diagenetic facies

Organoclay filled natural rubber (NR) nanocomposites were prepared using a laboratory two-roll mill. The effect of organoclay loading up to 10 phr was studied. The vulcanized nanocomposites were subjected to mechanical, thermal, and swelling tests. The results indicated that the tensile strength and elongation at break reached optimum at 4 phr of organoclay loading, and the incorporation of organoclay increased the tensile modulus and hardness of NR nanocomposites. The thermal degradation was shifted to a higher temperature and the weight loss decreased with incorporation of organoclay. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were employed to characterize the microstructure of NR nanocomposites. Results from TEM and XRD show the formation of intercalated and exfoliated individual silicate layers of organoclay filled NR nanocomposites particularly at low filler loading (< 4 phr).

To obtain a better understanding of climate change in south China in the Quaternary, a clay mineralogical study was undertaken on the red earth profile at Jiujiang, using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and particle-size distribution analysis methods. The XRD results showed that the clay minerals of the Jiujiang red earth were mainly mixed-layer illite–smectite (I/S), illite, kaolinite and vermiculite, with trace amounts of mixed-layer kaolinite–smectite (K/S). Changes in clay mineral composition displayed a trend of three-stage evolution. The higher mixed-layer I/S clays and kaolinite contents in the lower portion suggest extremely warm and humid climates over the period c. 700 to c. 350 ka ago. A gradual decrease in I/S clays and kaolinite reveals a gradual climate change from warm/humid to cool/dry during the period c. 350 to c. 130 ka ago. The higher illite and vermiculite contents indicate a relatively cool and dry climate during the period since c. 130 ka ago. The particle-size distribution pattern of the upper section was similar to that of the Xiashu loess, while that of the middle to lower section was similar to those of fluvially reworked red earth. A rapid increase in the abundance of large grain-size components at 2.6 m depth indicates an intensification of the winter monsoon and a cool and dry climate during the period, in good agreement with results from the clay mineral composition and homogeneous structure. The red earth sequences in south China could probably be used to test the response of tropical to subtropical regions to global climate changes.

Clay record of climate change since the mid-Pleistocene in Jiujiang, south China

Quantitative characterization of diagenetic facies has great significance for reservoir evaluation and prediction. In order to find out the method to evaluate diagenetic facies, the author took Chang 82 reservoir low-permeability sandstone in Zhenbei area of Ordos basin as research object and divided the reservoir into six types of diagenetic facies by analysis of casting thin section, scanning electron microscope, cathode luminescence, and physical property. According to 14 quantitative evaluating parameters which were related with petrology characteristic, diagenesis strength, pore structure, etc. quantitative evaluation of diagenetic facies of low-permeability sandstone reservoir was done by data envelopment analysis. The result showed that in the Chang 82 reservoir low-permeability sandstone in Zhenbei area of Ordos basin, quantitative representative indexes of diagenetic facies ranged from 0 to 1.00.
