The growing use of mobile technology on college campuses suggests the future of the classroom, including learning activities, research, and even student faculty communications, will rely heavily on mobile technology. Since Fall 2010, an interdisciplinary team of faculty from Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) has experimented with the use of iPads in the classroom. This paper includes the preliminary results of a study on student impressions of mobile technology in the classroom. The paper will report both opportunities and limitations for incorporating mobile technologies in learning environments.

iLearning: The Future of Higher Education? Student Perceptions on Learning with Mobile Tablets

Providing connectivity to around half of the world population living in rural or underprivileged areas is a tremendous challenge, but, at the same time, a unique opportunity. Access to the Internet would provide the population living in these areas a possibility to progress on the educational, health, environment, and business levels. In this article, a survey of technologies for providing connectivity to rural areas, which can help address this challenge, is provided. Although access/fronthaul and backhaul techniques are discussed in this article, it is noted that the major limitation for providing connectivity to rural and underprivileged areas is the cost of backhaul deployment. In addition, energy requirements and cost-efficiency of the studied technologies are analyzed. In fact, the challenges faced for deploying an electricity network, as a prerequisite for deploying communication networks, are huge in these areas, and they are granted an important share of the discussions in this article. Furthermore, typical application scenarios in rural areas are discussed, and several country-specific use cases are surveyed. The main initiatives by key international players aiming to provide rural connectivity are also described. Moreover, directions for the future evolution of rural connectivity are outlined in this article. Although there is no single solution that can solve all rural connectivity problems, building gradually on the current achievements in order to reach ubiquitous connectivity, while taking into account the particularities of each region and tailoring the solution accordingly, seems to be the most suitable path to follow.

A Key 6G Challenge and Opportunity—Connecting the Base of the Pyramid: A Survey on Rural Connectivity

Internet of Things (IoT) is the most challenging platform that designates the correlation of physical objects in the near future. A wide spectrum of review studies has been conducted to analyze and synthesize the use of IoT and its applications in various domains. Nonetheless, research neglects providing a comprehensive review study regarding the application of IoT in education. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is to highlight the recent progress of employing IoT applications in education and provide various opportunities and challenges for future trials. More specifically, this review study summarizes the prospects of adopting IoT in education, medical education and training, vocational education and training, Green IoT in education, and wearable technologies in education. It is concluded that the adoption of IoT and its applications in developing countries is still in its early stages and further research is highly encouraged.

This paper proposes a model to develop a university smart campus enabled through Internet-of-Thins (IoT) technology. The infusion of IoT in education embraces the internet-based communication between controllers, sensors and the physical objects. This landscape of modern technology has changed the universities education on a massive scale. Various objects are integrated with sensors, wearable technologies are collecting data with augmented reality and intra-communication is taking place through cloud computing. This IoT paradigm defines the diverse range of parameters for universities identifying opportunities to make them smart urging new interaction between objects and people. This research focuses to make smart rooms, smart parking as well as delivering smart education to students.

Understanding tablet computer usage among primary school students in underdeveloped areas

In this paper, the design and development of an Internet of Things (IoT) educational mobile learning tool for primary school students in rural underprivileged areas of northern Thailand will be presented. This is aimed at providing effective learning activities and utilising the large number of under-used tablet computers which are still available in schools from the government's discontinued “One Tablet PC per Child” (OTPC) policy. During previous studies, we found tablet computers had the potential to enhance students' engagement and learning performance. However, most rural schools were lacking internet connectivity. Our aim is to design and develop an effective solution for students in rural underprivileged areas of Northern Thailand which will provide them with a mobile learning platform and an application which works with the existing schools' tablet computers. In this paper, we will outline the literature review in the area of mobile learning and Internet of Things (IoT) technology in education, discuss our preliminary study of the use of tablet computers by primary students in under developed areas and demonstrate the design and development of a mobile learning platform which addresses the provision of a reliable, low-cost, sensing WiFi device and child-friendly mobile application.
