Observation of a new particle in the search for the Standard Model Higgs boson with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

This paper surveys the field of augmented reality AR, in which 3D virtual objects are integrated into a 3D real environment in real time. It describes the medical, manufacturing, visualization, path planning, entertainment, and military applications that have been explored. This paper describes the characteristics of augmented reality systems, including a detailed discussion of the tradeoffs between optical and video blending approaches. Registration and sensing errors are two of the biggest problems in building effective augmented reality systems, so this paper summarizes current efforts to overcome these problems. Future directions and areas requiring further research are discussed. This survey provides a starting point for anyone interested in researching or using augmented reality.

Image registration methods: a survey

Interventional, fast MR images were registered to pre-operative CT and MR images of a primate cadaver. Localisation of an MR compatible, visible, flexible endoscope was achieved to within 2mm in the nasal cavity. Orthogonal views of the endoscope's position can be displayed alongside oriented video endoscope images to give 3D visualisation.

We present an extension of the scale space idea to surfaces, with the aim of extending ideas like Gaussian derivatives to function on curved spaces. This is done by using the fact, also valid for normal images, that among the continuous range of scales at which one can look at an image, or surface, there is a infinite discrete subset which has a natural geometric interpretation. We call them "proper scales", as they are defined by eigenvalues of an elliptic partial Differential operator associated with the image, or shape. The computations are performed using the Finite Element technique.

Flowing blood can cause streak or blob artefacts in MR images and these may degrade subsequent image analysis. Multiple MRI receiver coils enable the reconstruction of images using data from different combinations of coils. The artefact intensities differ in these images due to the differing coil sensitivities. The artefact cause is parameterised and an optimisation routine is used to find self-consistent image reconstructions which have reduced artefacts.
