Although conventional chemotherapy has been successful to some extent, the main drawbacks of chemotherapy are its poor bioavailability, high-dose requirements, adverse side effects, low therapeutic indices, development of multiple drug resistance, and non-specific targeting. The main aim in the development of drug delivery vehicles is to successfully address these delivery-related problems and carry drugs to the desired sites of therapeutic action while reducing adverse side effects. In this review, we will discuss the different types of materials used as delivery vehicles for chemotherapeutic agents and their structural characteristics that improve the therapeutic efficacy of their drugs and will describe recent scientific advances in the area of chemotherapy, emphasizing challenges in cancer treatments.

Hydrogels for biomedical applications.

Objective The study represents an interesting case report for a very good aphrodisiac activity observed during an oral glucose tolerance test performed while evaluating the antidiabetic potential of Pedalium murex Linn. fruit. Methods Ethanolic extract of Pedalium murex at a dose of 125, 250 and 500 mg/kg p.o. was given to the rats followed by administration of 2 g/kg p.o. of glucose 30 min after the administration of extract. Results Pregnancy was observed in the treated groups after 20-25 days of treatment in females which resulted in birth of pubs ranging upto ten in some females (more significant in case of 500 mg/kg p.o.). The observation also showed a significant increase in weights of pubs along with a normal behavior pattern. The increased pregnancy rate in the drug treated groups may be due to the healthy viable sperm and enhancement of sexual desire of the rats. Conclusion From the results it may be concluded that the fruits of the plant may be used as a good aphrodisiac agent to promote fertility rate.

Aphrodisiac activity of ethanolic extract of Pedalium murex Linn fruit

This chapter describes the influence of different types of nanoparticles such as metals, metal oxides, ceramics, natural clay, various forms of carbon, and zeolites on the properties of polyurethanes with special emphasis on the dimensionality of the nanoparticles. First, classification of the nanoparticles is made with typical examples. Distribution of the particles in polyurethane matrix and their interaction with the polymer chain alter the morphology of polyurethane both at the surface and in the bulk, which in turn is responsible for the dramatic changes in the properties of the composites. Organic modification on the surface of the nanoparticles makes significant changes to the overall properties of the composites. Self-assembly phenomena in polyurethanes are illustrated where hydrogen bonded molecular layers stack together forming bigger clusters observable in an optical microscope. The impact of layer by layer self-assembly on drug delivery and other properties is discussed. Improvements in the thermal and mechanical properties and flame retardancy of the composites with different types of nanoparticles are presented in detail with examples. Polyurethanes are widely used in biomedical fields and the present chapter elaborates the effectiveness of the composites toward biocompatibility including in vivo use vis-a-vis pure polyurethanes. It is suggested that polyurethane nanocomposites have great potential in biomedical applications.

Nanoparticle-induced phenomena in polyurethanes

Objective To develop a novel qualitative and quantitative technique, which can pave the way for rapid and selective determination of different phytoconstituents of Gymnema sylvestre ( G. sylvestre ). Methods Phytochemical test, TLC analysis, solubility study, total phenol and flavonoid content and antimicrobial study were performed in the present investigation. Fingerprint analysis and quantitative analysis of quercetin were also performed through hptlc method. Results Alkaloid, saponin, tannin, triterpenoid and flavonoid were found to be present in the G. sylvestre extract. Solubility in water and alcohal, moisture content and gymnemic acid content were found to be 86.36%, 88.24%, 4.20%, and 26.24% w/w. total phenol and flavonoid content were found to be 0.80% and 1.90%. Microbiological assay showed that E. coli and salmonella were found to be absent whereas total bacterial count and yeast & moulds contents were found to be 650 and 60 cfu/g. quantitative analysis through hptlc revealed the presence of 2.95% w/w of quercetin. Conclusions In future this study will be helpful for the quantitative analysis of phytoconstituents as well as standardization of the G. sylvestre .

A review on phytopharmaceutical importance of asiaticoside

Several methods are frequently used to make high-value-added biomaterials from waste biomass for various biomedical applications. Hydroxyapatite (HA), a type of bio-ceramic material, has received considerable attention for use in bone tissue and implanted medical devices owing to its physiochemical properties and excellent biocompatibility. It can be synthesized from calcium- and phosphorous-containing precursor moieties such as calcium oxide and tricalcium phosphate (TCP). In this study, we synthesized an HA bio-ceramic from bio-waste eggshells via a reaction between calcium oxide and TCP, followed by heat treatment. The synthesized HA was characterized through scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The material exhibited no significant cytotoxicity even at a higher concentration, indicating high biocompatibility. Our study provides an effective way of converting low-cost bio-waste eggshells into a value-added biomaterial for tissue-engineering applications.
