The purpose of this paper is to explore the knowledge infrastructure of methodological research on partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) from a network point of view. The analysis involves the structures of authors, institutions, countries and co-citation networks, and discloses trending developments in the field.,Based on bibliometric data downloaded from the Web of Science, the authors apply various social network analysis (SNA) and visualization tools to examine the structure of knowledge networks of the PLS-SEM domain. Specifically, the authors investigate the PLS-SEM knowledge network by analyzing 84 methodological studies published in 39 journals by 145 authors from 106 institutions.,The analysis reveals that specific authors dominate the network, whereas most authors work in isolated groups, loosely connected to the network’s focal authors. Besides presenting the results of a country level analysis, the research also identifies journals that play a key role in disseminating knowledge in the network. Finally, a burst detection analysis indicates that method comparisons and extensions, for example, to estimate common factor model data or to leverage PLS-SEM’s predictive capabilities, feature prominently in recent research.,Addressing the limitations of prior systematic literature reviews on the PLS-SEM method, this is the first study to apply SNA to reveal the interrelated structures and properties of PLS-SEM’s research domain.

Methodological research on partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM)

The purpose of this paper is to explore the effects of excessive social media use on individual job performance and its exact mechanism. An extended stressor–strain–outcome research model is proposed to explain how excessive social media use at work influences individual job performance.,The research model was empirically tested with an online survey study of 230 working professionals who use social media in organizations.,The results revealed that excessive social media use was a determinant of three types of social media overload (i.e. information, communication and social overload). Information and communication overload were significant stressors that influence social media exhaustion, while social overload was not a significant predictor of exhaustion. Furthermore, social media exhaustion significantly reduces individual job performance.,Theory-driven investigation of the effects of excessive social media use on individual job performance is still relatively scarce, underscoring the need for theoretically-based research of excessive social media use at work. This paper enriches social media research by presenting an extended stressor–strain–outcome model to explore the exact mechanism of excessive use of social media at work, and identifying three components of social media-related overload, including information, communication and social overload. It is an initial attempt to systematically validate the casual relationships among excessive usage experience, overload, exhaustion and individual job performance based on the transactional theory of stress and coping.

Exploring the influence of excessive social media use at work: A three-dimension usage perspective

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influence of social media on employees’ work performance, as well as the underlying mechanism for how they create value at work. Design/methodology/approach – Based on media synchronicity and social capital theories, the authors propose that social media can foster employees’ social capital and subsequently facilitate knowledge transfer. Both social capital and knowledge transfer help promote work performance. Specifically, the authors adopt shared vision, network ties and trust to represent, respectively, the cognitive, structural and relational dimensions of social capital. The research model is tested using data collected from 379 Chinese working professionals. Toward a theory of perceived benefits, affective commitment, and continuance intention in social virtual worlds: cultural values (indulgence and individualism) matter

This paper examines how mobile and wireless technology (MWT) characteristics affect user satisfaction in the mGovernment field to which mGovernment literature thus far has paid little attention. Specifically, we identify seven MWT functions of mGovernment and explore the underlying process through which the seven MWT functions affect user satisfaction. By integrating the task-technology fit perspective and theory of procedural fairness, we develop a research model to demonstrate that the seven MWT functions of mGovernment reshape three characteristics of fair decision procedures and increase the procedural fairness of governmental services, which, in turn, improve user satisfaction. A total of 449 experienced users in China responded to a survey. The results indicate that 1) two time-critical functions of mGovernment improve transparency, 2) a location-sensitive function and a mobile multimedia function promote information accuracy and 3) three personal control functions increase voice opportunity. Further, the three fair procedural characteristics (i.e., transparency, information accuracy and voice) increase procedural fairness of governmental services, which, in turn, increases user satisfaction. This study results in a theoretical contribution to e/mGovernment and mobile service literature by explaining "which" and "how" MWT functions affect user satisfaction. Moreover, it applies and complements theory of procedural fairness in the context of mGovernment. This study also suggests guidelines for government agencies and system developers on selecting a suitable portfolio of MWT functions to fit government's various task needs and to improve user satisfaction. We identify seven MWT (mobile and wireless technology) functions of mGovernment systems.We explore the mediating processes through which the seven MWT functions affect user satisfaction toward mGovernment.Results show that the seven MWT functions improve three fair procedural characteristics.Results show that the three procedural characteristics increase procedural fairness of governmental services.Results show that procedural fairness of governmental services increases user satisfaction toward mGovernment.

How to satisfy citizens? Using mobile government to reengineer fair government processes

Knowledge transfer has long been a major focus of research in the literature on MNCs in developed countries. However, reverse knowledge transfer in MNCs in developing countries (e.g., China) has received limited attention. By integrating mentorship, social capital and international adjustment theories, this study develop a theoretical model to demonstrate when and how mentoring improves reverse transfer of tacit knowledge in Chinese MNCs. In particular, we propose that (1) mentoring functions (i.e., vocational support, psychological support and role modelling) should have positive effects on three dimensions of social capital (i.e., ties strength; trust; shared language and vision), which in turn, should improve reverse transfer of tacit knowledge from foreign mentors to Chinese mentees. (2) International adjustment of mentors (i.e., work adjustment, interaction adjustment and general adjustment) is expected to moderate the relationships of mentoring with ties strength, trust, shared language and vision. This is a research-in-progress paper and a survey should be conducted to test the theoretical model. This research should provide theoretical and practical implications.
