Sanitation: What's the Real Problem?

TL;DR: The real sanitation problem must surely lie with those developing country governments who have shown little commitment in practice to sanitation despite international sanitation advocacy since 1980 as discussed by the authors, which is clearly shown in the number of open defecators in the world today.
Journal ArticleDOI

Research on waste stabilisation ponds in the United Kingdom--initial results from pilot-scale facultative ponds.

TL;DR: Results indicate that a much lower loading is required to maintain facultative conditions than to optimise BOD and SS removal and that an algal population was not maintained in winter.
Journal ArticleDOI

Efficiency of Faecal Bacterial Removal in Waste Stabilisation Ponds in Kenya

TL;DR: Results for faecal coliform die-off rates are presented for seven different waste stabilisation pond systems in Kenya, which were sampled as part of a national pond monitoring and evaluation study carried out during 1988-1989.
Journal ArticleDOI

Ammonia removal in a pilot-scale WSP complex in Northeast Brazil

TL;DR: Ammonia removal in a waste stabilisation pond complex comprising ponds of different geometries and depths under two different operational regimes was monitored in this paper. But it was found that a high degree of ammonia removal commenced in the secondary maturation ponds, with the highest removals occurring in the shallowest ponds as a consequence of improved aerobic conditions.
