Journal ArticleDOI

Nitrogen removal in pond systems with different configurations and geometries

TL;DR: Low nitrogen removal in its various chemical forms was evaluated in a complex of waste stabilisation ponds comprising ponds of different depths and geometries, and high nitrogen and ammonia removal was compatible with optimal BOD5 removal and faecal coliform die-off.
Journal ArticleDOI

Ammonia removal in a pilot-scale WSP complex in Northeast Brazil

TL;DR: Ammonia removal in a waste stabilisation pond complex comprising ponds of different geometries and depths under two different operational regimes was monitored in this paper. But it was found that a high degree of ammonia removal commenced in the secondary maturation ponds, with the highest removals occurring in the shallowest ponds as a consequence of improved aerobic conditions.
Journal ArticleDOI

Water Column Sampling as a Rapid and Efficient Method of Determining Effluent Quality and the Performance of Waste Stabilization Ponds

TL;DR: In this paper, a diurnal series of samples of the effluent and the total in-pond water column of facultative and maturation ponds were analysed for COD, suspended solids, faecal coliforms, chlorophyll and ammonia with a view to finding the most efficient way of obtaining reliable mean daily effluent quality data.
Journal ArticleDOI

The Performance of a Series of Five Deep Waste Stabilization Ponds in Northeast Brazil

TL;DR: In this article, the performance of a series of 2.2 m deep anaerobic, facultative and maturation ponds, which had an overall retention time of 25 days, and a mean mid-depth temperature of 25 ° C, was studied.
Journal ArticleDOI

Sulphur and phosphorus transformations in wastewater storage and treatment reservoirs in northeast Brazil

TL;DR: Sulphur and phosphorous transformations were studied in two pilot-scale wastewater storage and treatment reservoirs on the basis of four experiments carried out at EXTRABES in northeast Brazil.
