Cationic polymer/anionic surfactant interactions☆

The sorption of a cationic cellulose ether by bleached hair as a model keratinous substrate has been studied by a radiotracer method. The sorption process is characterized by a rapid initial uptake of polymer, followed by a much slower increase that can take a week or more to reach equilibrium. The sorbed amount is over 6% of the weight of the substrate for a solution concentration of one percent. The data are consistent with a mechanism involving penetration of polymer into the hair shaft. Surfactants cause a reduction in the amount of polymer sorbed. Among those studied were a nonionic ethoxylated secondary fatty alcohol, the anionic sodium lauryl sulfate, and the cationic myristyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride. Amounts of reduction caused by these materials varied widely, the greatest effect being with the cationic.
