The Swift mission, scheduled for launch in 2004, is a multiwavelength observatory for gamma-ray burst (GRB) astronomy. It is a first-of-its-kind autonomous rapid-slewing satellite for transient astronomy and pioneers the way for future rapid-reaction and multiwavelength missions. It will be far more powerful than any previous GRB mission, observing more than 100 bursts yr � 1 and performing detailed X-ray and UV/optical afterglow observations spanning timescales from 1 minute to several days after the burst. The objectives are to (1) determine the origin of GRBs, (2) classify GRBs and search for new types, (3) study the interaction of the ultrarelativistic outflows of GRBs with their surrounding medium, and (4) use GRBs to study the early universe out to z >10. The mission is being developed by a NASA-led international collaboration. It will carry three instruments: a newgeneration wide-field gamma-ray (15‐150 keV) detector that will detect bursts, calculate 1 0 ‐4 0 positions, and trigger autonomous spacecraft slews; a narrow-field X-ray telescope that will give 5 00 positions and perform spectroscopy in the 0.2‐10 keV band; and a narrow-field UV/optical telescope that will operate in the 170‐ 600 nm band and provide 0B3 positions and optical finding charts. Redshift determinations will be made for most bursts. In addition to the primary GRB science, the mission will perform a hard X-ray survey to a sensitivity of � 1m crab (� 2;10 � 11 ergs cm � 2 s � 1 in the 15‐150 keV band), more than an order of magnitude better than HEAO 1 A-4. The Swift Gamma-Ray Burst Mission

(Abridged) The Large Area Telescope (Fermi/LAT, hereafter LAT), the primary instrument on the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (Fermi) mission, is an imaging, wide field-of-view, high-energy gamma-ray telescope, covering the energy range from below 20 MeV to more than 300 GeV. This paper describes the LAT, its pre-flight expected performance, and summarizes the key science objectives that will be addressed. On-orbit performance will be presented in detail in a subsequent paper. The LAT is a pair-conversion telescope with a precision tracker and calorimeter, each consisting of a 4x4 array of 16 modules, a segmented anticoincidence detector that covers the tracker array, and a programmable trigger and data acquisition system. Each tracker module has a vertical stack of 18 x,y tracking planes, including two layers (x and y) of single-sided silicon strip detectors and high-Z converter material (tungsten) per tray. Every calorimeter module has 96 CsI(Tl) crystals, arranged in an 8 layer hodoscopic configuration with a total depth of 8.6 radiation lengths. The aspect ratio of the tracker (height/width) is 0.4 allowing a large field-of-view (2.4 sr). Data obtained with the LAT are intended to (i) permit rapid notification of high-energy gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and transients and facilitate monitoring of variable sources, (ii) yield an extensive catalog of several thousand high-energy sources obtained from an all-sky survey, (iii) measure spectra from 20 MeV to more than 50 GeV for several hundred sources, (iv) localize point sources to 0.3 - 2 arc minutes, (v) map and obtain spectra of extended sources such as SNRs, molecular clouds, and nearby galaxies, (vi) measure the diffuse isotropic gamma-ray background up to TeV energies, and (vii) explore the discovery space for dark matter.

The Large Area Telescope on the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope Mission

On 2017 August 17 a binary neutron star coalescence candidate (later designated GW170817) with merger time 12:41:04 UTC was observed through gravitational waves by the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. The Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor independently detected a gamma-ray burst (GRB 170817A) with a time delay of $\sim 1.7\,{\rm{s}}$ with respect to the merger time. From the gravitational-wave signal, the source was initially localized to a sky region of 31 deg2 at a luminosity distance of ${40}_{-8}^{+8}$ Mpc and with component masses consistent with neutron stars. The component masses were later measured to be in the range 0.86 to 2.26 $\,{M}_{\odot }$. An extensive observing campaign was launched across the electromagnetic spectrum leading to the discovery of a bright optical transient (SSS17a, now with the IAU identification of AT 2017gfo) in NGC 4993 (at $\sim 40\,{\rm{Mpc}}$) less than 11 hours after the merger by the One-Meter, Two Hemisphere (1M2H) team using the 1 m Swope Telescope. The optical transient was independently detected by multiple teams within an hour. Subsequent observations targeted the object and its environment. Early ultraviolet observations revealed a blue transient that faded within 48 hours. Optical and infrared observations showed a redward evolution over ~10 days. Following early non-detections, X-ray and radio emission were discovered at the transient's position $\sim 9$ and $\sim 16$ days, respectively, after the merger. Both the X-ray and radio emission likely arise from a physical process that is distinct from the one that generates the UV/optical/near-infrared emission. No ultra-high-energy gamma-rays and no neutrino candidates consistent with the source were found in follow-up searches. These observations support the hypothesis that GW170817 was produced by the merger of two neutron stars in NGC 4993 followed by a short gamma-ray burst (GRB 170817A) and a kilonova/macronova powered by the radioactive decay of r-process nuclei synthesized in the ejecta.

Multi-messenger observations of a binary neutron star merger

On 2017 August 17, the gravitational-wave event GW170817 was observed by the Advanced LIGO and Virgo detectors, and the gamma-ray burst (GRB) GRB 170817A was observed independently by the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor, and the Anti-Coincidence Shield for the Spectrometer for the International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory. The probability of the near-simultaneous temporal and spatial observation of GRB 170817A and GW170817 occurring by chance is $5.0\times {10}^{-8}$. We therefore confirm binary neutron star mergers as a progenitor of short GRBs. The association of GW170817 and GRB 170817A provides new insight into fundamental physics and the origin of short GRBs. We use the observed time delay of $(+1.74\pm 0.05)\,{\rm{s}}$ between GRB 170817A and GW170817 to: (i) constrain the difference between the speed of gravity and the speed of light to be between $-3\times {10}^{-15}$ and $+7\times {10}^{-16}$ times the speed of light, (ii) place new bounds on the violation of Lorentz invariance, (iii) present a new test of the equivalence principle by constraining the Shapiro delay between gravitational and electromagnetic radiation. We also use the time delay to constrain the size and bulk Lorentz factor of the region emitting the gamma-rays. GRB 170817A is the closest short GRB with a known distance, but is between 2 and 6 orders of magnitude less energetic than other bursts with measured redshift. A new generation of gamma-ray detectors, and subthreshold searches in existing detectors, will be essential to detect similar short bursts at greater distances. Finally, we predict a joint detection rate for the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor and the Advanced LIGO and Virgo detectors of 0.1–1.4 per year during the 2018–2019 observing run and 0.3–1.7 per year at design sensitivity.

Gravitational Waves and Gamma-Rays from a Binary Neutron Star Merger: GW170817 and GRB 170817A

The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) will search for planets transiting bright and nearby stars. TESS has been selected by NASA for launch in 2017 as an Astrophysics Explorer mission. The spacecraft will be placed into a highly elliptical 13.7-day orbit around the Earth. During its 2-year mission, TESS will employ four wide-field optical charge-coupled device cameras to monitor at least 200,000 main-sequence dwarf stars with I C ≈4−13 for temporary drops in brightness caused by planetary transits. Each star will be observed for an interval ranging from 1 month to 1 year, depending mainly on the star’s ecliptic latitude. The longest observing intervals will be for stars near the ecliptic poles, which are the optimal locations for follow-up observations with the James Webb Space Telescope. Brightness measurements of preselected target stars will be recorded every 2 min, and full frame images will be recorded every 30 min. TESS stars will be 10 to 100 times brighter than those surveyed by the pioneering Kepler mission. This will make TESS planets easier to characterize with follow-up observations. TESS is expected to find more than a thousand planets smaller than Neptune, including dozens that are comparable in size to the Earth. Public data releases will occur every 4 months, inviting immediate community-wide efforts to study the new planets. The TESS legacy will be a catalog of the nearest and brightest stars hosting transiting planets, which will endure as highly favorable targets for detailed investigations.

The results of Spartan 1 X-ray observations of the region within 1.25 deg of the Galactic center are presented. Four strong, hard X-ray point sources were detected: A1742-294, 1E 1740.7-2942, IE 1743.1-2843, and a new source SP 1744.2-2959 about 0.5 deg southeast of A1742-294. The new source had an intensity about 20 percent of that of A1742-294 and was relatively hard, having spectral parameters close to those of the diffuse source and of the Galactic bulge source GX 3+1. The Galactic nucleus X-ray source appears to have been a factor of four fainter during the 1985 Spartan 1 observations than during the 1979 Einstein observations. Hard, diffuse X-ray emission centered near the Galactic center, about 1 deg in extent, aligned to within 20 deg of the Galactic equator, and having a maximum 2-10 keV brightness of 1.5 x 10 to the -6th ergs/sq cm/s/sr was detected, as were two weaker point sources about 0.1 deg northeast and southeast of the Galactic nucleus, embedded in the diffuse emission.

X-ray observations of the galactic center by SPARTAN 1

The 1979 March 5 gamma-ray transient has long been thought to be fundamentally different from the classic gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). It had recurrences, pulsations, and a soft spectral component unlike classic GRBs. With the exception of the soft component reported from the KONUS experiment, the unusual characteristics of the March 5 transient were detectable primarily because it was extremely bright. Computer limitations, satellite transmission effects or pulse pileup, and dead-time effects have prevented, until now, the analysis of spectra from the {ital International} {ital Cometary} {ital Explorer} ({ital ICE}) and the {ital Pioneer} {ital Venus} {ital Orbiter} ({ital PVO}). The {ital ICE}-{ital PVO} spectrum of the main peak differs markedly from the published KONUS spectrum. Rather than being dominated by a soft component similar to that observed in the soft gamma repeaters (SGRs), the {ital ICE}-{ital PVO} spectrum appears to be consistent with a classic GRB spectrum, especially above 100 keV. Above 100 keV, the spectrum is consistent with thermal bremsstrahlung with a temperature of {approximately}200 keV, somewhat soft but within the range of classic GRBs. We believe that, given the {ital ICE}-{ital PVO} spectral observations, the March 5 transient would have been classified as a classic GRB when itmore » was discovered. Although a formal analysis has not been done, the pulsations and recurrences might still be unique features that distinguish the March 5 transient from GRBs. The {ital ICE} spectrum provides evidence for a low-energy cutoff at 100 keV. If high-velocity neutron stars are born as misaligned rotators with their velocities aligned with their spin axes and if their emissions are beamed, then when they are young their spatial distribution will be similar to the SGRs. If torques can align the field with the spin axis, then when they are old their spatial distribution will be isotropic like classic GRBs. (Abstract Truncated)« less

Soft Gamma Repeaters (SGRs) are a class of rare, high-energy galactic transients that have episodes of short (~0.1 sec), soft (~30 keV), intense (~100 Crab), gamma-ray bursts. We report an analysis of the x-ray emission from 95 SGR1806-20 events observed by the International Cometary Explorer. The spectral shape remains remarkably constant for bursts that differ in intensity by a range of 50. Below 15 keV the number spectrum falls off rapidly such that we can estimate the total intensity of the events. Assuming that SGR1806-20 is associated with the supernova remnant G10.0-0.3 (Kulkarni and Frail, Murakami \\etal), the brightest events had a total luminosity of ~1.8 x 10^42 erg sec^-1, a factor of 2 x 10^4 above the Eddington limit. A third of the emission was above 30 keV. There are at least three processes that are consistent with the spectral rollover below 15 keV. (1)The rollover is consistent with some forms of self absorption. Typical thermal temperatures are ~20 keV and require an emitting surface with a radius between 10 and 50 km. The lack of spectral variability implies that only the size of the emitting surface varies between events. If the process is thermal synchrotron the required magnetic field might be too small to confine the plasma against the super Eddington flux. (2)The low energy rollover could be due to photoelectric absorption by ~10^24 Hydrogen atoms cm^-2 of neutral material with a cosmic abundance assuming a continuum similar to TB with T= ~22 keV. (3) Emission in the two lowest harmonics from a 1.3 x 10^12 Gauss field would appear as Doppler broadened lines and fall off rapidly below 15 keV.
