TL;DR: In this article, the effects of intensive blood-glucose control with either sulphonylurea or insulin and conventional treatment on the risk of microvascular and macrovascular complications in patients with type 2 diabetes in a randomised controlled trial were compared.
Journal Article
U.K. prospective diabetes study 16. Overview of 6 years' therapy of type II diabetes: a progressive disease
R. C. Turner,Carole A. Cull,Irene M Stratton,Susan E. Manley,E. M. Kohner,David R Matthews,Neil Haw.,Jonathan C. Levy,Rury R. Holman +8 more
TL;DR: Sulfonylurea, metformin, and insulin therapies were similarly effective in improving glucose control compared with a policy of diet therapy and whether any specific therapy is advantageous or disadvantageous.
Journal ArticleDOI
UKPDS 50: risk factors for incidence and progression of retinopathy in Type II diabetes over 6 years from diagnosis.
Irene M Stratton,E. M. Kohner,S. J. Aldington,R. C. Turner,Rury R. Holman,Susan E. Manley,David R. Matthews +6 more
TL;DR: Development of retinopathy (incidence) was strongly associated with baseline glycaemia, glycaemic exposure over 6 years, higher blood pressure and with not smoking and progression was associated with older age, male sex, hyperglycaemia (as evidenced by a higher HbA1 c) and withNot smoking.
Journal ArticleDOI
United kingdom prospective diabetes study, 30: diabetic retinopathy at diagnosis of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and associated risk factors
E. M. Kohner,Stephen J Aldington,Irene M Stratton,Susan E. Manley,Rury R. Holman,David R. Matthews,R C Turner +6 more
TL;DR: Diabetic retinopathy is common in patients with newly diagnosed NIDDM and there was a trend for those with more severe retinal lesions to have worse visual acuity, while leaner women had more severe eye lesions.
Journal Article
United kingdom prospective diabetes study 24: A 6-year, randomized, controlled trial comparing sulfonylurea, insulin, and metformin therapy in patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes that could not be controlled with diet therapy

TL;DR: The response to treatment with oral hypoglycemic drugs or insulin in a subgroup of patients recruited to the UKPS who continued to have marked hyperglycemia or hyperglycemic symptoms during the initial 3 months of diet therapy and in whom continued diet therapy alone was not an option is reported.
