A review on anti-peptic ulcer activities of medicinal plants used in the formulation of ENTERICA, DYSPEPSIA and NPK 500 CAPSULES


 
 Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) leaves and stem grown in
 Korea were analyzed to determine their nutritional compositions. Quinoa leaves
 exhibited significantly higher levels of crude protein, crude lipid, crude ash,
 carbohydrate, and dietary fiber than those of the quinoa stem. Fructose and
 glucose were only detected in stem, and they contents were 44.25 mg% and 107.62
 mg%, respectively. Acetic acid was the most plentiful organic acid in leaves and
 stem of quinoa, with their higher levels determined in leaves (428.40 mg%). The
 major minerals of quinoa were potassium and calcium, especially potassium was
 verified as having the highest level in leaves (750.65 mg%) and stem (869.15
 mg%) of quinoa. In addition, linolenic acid (C18:3, n-3) contained as highest
 level was detected only in leaves (176.09 mg%) but no identified in stem. It was
 found that quinoa leaves contained many kinds of vitamin such as vitamin
 B1 (293.35 μg/100 g), B2
 (256.54 μg/100 g), C (2.02 mg/100 g), and E (2.25 mg/100
 g). These findings suggest that quinoa leaves and stem are an excellent source
 for developing of salads and various processed products, further this study
 presents the application prospect of quinoa to various food industry fields.

Nutritional compositions in young leaves and stem from quinoa
 (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) grown in Korea

Jalin Herbal Mannex Liquid (JHML) is a polyherbal formulation from honey, Panax ginseng, Liriosma ovate, and Lepidium mehenil, intended for enhanced sexual performance and improve sperm count in men. JHML was studied via its effect on body weight, biochemical indices and histopathology of the testes. Twenty healthy Wistar rats of 120 -150 g weight were allotted into groups A and B., of ten rats each, group A (control), were given 2 mL/kg B.W of tap water, group B were dosed with 2 mL/kg B.W of JHML for four weeks with the animals allowed access to feed and water ad-libitum. Blood were obtained through heart perforation, kidney and testes were excised, washed with normal buffered saline. Results from the investigation indicated that JHML had androgenic properties with marked significant increase (p˂0.05) in body weight of rats administered with JHML. Significant increase (p˂0.05) was observed in LH, FSH, testosterone and with a concomitant significant decrease (p˂0.05) in PRL. The JHML caused non-significant decrease (p>0.05) on triglycerides and cholesterol but with positive significant effect (p ˂ 0.05) on LDL and HDL. No significant changes (p>0.05) on creatinine, urea, uric acid and serum electrolytes. Testicular sections of rats treated with JHML exhibited normal features, seminiferous epithelium and interstitial tissues with active spermatogene sis. The significant increase (p˂0.05) in testosterone, LH, FSH with a concomitant significant decrease (p˂0.05) in PRL may account for its sex invigorating potential, the non-significant changes observed in some biochemical indices of the rats showed that JHML is relatively safe at the studied dose.

Investigation into the intake of a popular polyherbal drug (Jalin Herbal Mannex Liquid) on selected biochemical indices of male wister rats

Humanity has constantly sought empirical treatments for health problems and nutritional deficits since the 20th century. In this regard, synthetic medications have been in extensive use. However, their applications in such conditions are often accompanied by negative side effects coupled with accounts of the development of resistance, which has driven an increase in the quest for creative alternatives like plant-based medications. Thus, botanicals derived from plants with medicinal attributes are an indispensable component of existence today. They enhance good health particularly for residents in remote areas where access to appropriate nutrition and healthcare is often a challenge. In the present investigation, the phytochemical and nutritional constituents of ethanol leaf extracts of two significant plants with nutritional and therapeutic relevance, Dennettia tripetala, and Aframomum melegueta, were comparatively examined through the exploration of established protocols. In the phytochemical investigation, D. tripetala has a predominance of alkaloids (4.91%), terpenes (3.03%), saponins (3.76%), flavonoids (6.10%), and tannins (5.89%). Contrarily, no significant difference (p> 0.05) was observed in the cardiac glycoside contents of D. tripetala (2.25%), and A. melegueta (2.38%). The proximate data shows a greater proportion of moisture (13.11%), protein (10.54%), fibre (5.01%) and carbohydrate (59.36%) contents in D. tripetala. However, A. melegueta had a greater quantity of ash, and lipids (11.76 %, and 7.46%) than D. tripetala (6.52%, and 5.42%). The elemental assessment of the leaves shows that the concentrations of calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, iron, manganese, and phosphorous in A. melegueta were significantly higher (p<0.05) than those of D. tripetala. The opposite results were obtained for the levels of Zinc and Copper in A. melegueta and D. tripetala respectively. Therefore, the differential compositions of the chemical components present in leaf extracts of the two plants have given an insight into the best source of active principles and nutrients among them, to exploit in medicinal preparations and diet formulations for combating diseased conditions induced by pathogenic organisms and nutritional inadequacies respectively.

Phytochemical and Nutritional Constituents of Leaf Extracts of Two Edible Medicinal Plants in Nigeria: A Comparative Appraisal

Aims: Quantitative phytochemical, proximate and some mineral content of the leaves and stem bark of Spondia mombin, a plant commonly found in Southern Nigeria was studied with a view of ascertaining their nutritional potential and justification for their ethnopharmacological uses. Place and Duration of Study: The study was conducted in the research Laboratory of the Department of Biochemistry, Federal University Otuoke, Bayelsa State, Nigeria, between February – March 2019. Methodology: Proximate composition, quantitative phytochemical, and mineral contents of the samples were studied using standard analytical methods of the Association of Analytical Chemist (AOAC). Results: Proximate analysis of the leaves and stem bark showed that there was no significant difference (P > 0.05) between the carbohydrate and protein content of both leaves and stem bark while the stem bark had significantly higher (P< 0.05) values for ash, fat and fibre when compared to the leaves which incidentally had significantly higher (P< 0.05) moisture content. Quantitative phytochemical analysis revealed that there was no significant difference (P > 0.05) between the Original Research Article Kpomah and Odokwo; ARRB, 35(6): 90-98, 2020; Article no.ARRB.58009 91 leaves and stem bark with reference to tannin, oxalate and phytate, the stem bark, however, showed significantly higher (P< 0.05) values for alkaloids, saponin and cyanogenic glycosides when compared to the leaves, although flavonoids and phenols were significantly (P< 0.05) higher in the leaves. Mineral (elemental) analysis of both leaves and stem bark indicated the presence of macro and micro minerals in varying amounts. Conclusion: These findings indicated that S. mombin contained an appreciable amount of nutrients and minerals which could be included in the diet to supplement our daily nutrients and animal feeds, while the presence of the phytochemical may justify their use in ethnomedicine for the prevention, treatment and management of diverse health challenges, the phytochemicals may also act as lead compounds in the development of new drugs to counteract the present drug-resistant phenomenon.

Comparative Phytochemical, Proximate and Some Mineral Composition of the Leaves and Stem Bark of Spondia mombin (L. anacardiaceae)

The chemical and biological profiling of the methanolic extract of the floral part of Costus lucanisianus have been carried out. The floral part was collected from Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. The floral part was air dried, grinded and extracted at room temperature in methanol. The methanol extract mixture was then concentrated under pressure. The concentrated extract, MCL was subjected to quantitative phytochemical screening, antioxidant and antimicrobial profiling. The result of the quantitative analysis showed the presence of phenols (14.853±0.350), tannins (6.638±0.051), alkaloids (3.72±0.02), flavonoids (59.444±0.000) and saponins (2.93±0.06). The antioxidant activity increases as the concentration of the methanolic extract increases. Biologically, the floral part has shown activities against the following strains of microbes: Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtillis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhi, Candida albican, Klebsiela pneumonia, and Fusarium spp. with the highest activity observed against Staphylococcus aureus. The least antimicrobial activity was observed for Escherichia coli. The present study has established the phytoconstitution, in vitro antioxidant and antimicrobial activities.
