A method for wireless communications is provided. The method includes determining a set of handover parameters that facilitate a handover between cells in a wireless network and analyzing the set of handover parameters. The method includes dynamically adjusting the parameters to mitigate handover failures between the cells.

Method and apparatus for automatic handover optimization

To meet the growing demand for broadband wireless connectivity, integrating 3G and IEEE 802.16 networks is a clear and viable solution. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first solution proposed for the integration of 3G and 802.16 wireless networks. We present a novel network and mobile client architecture that provides seamless roaming and mobility while maintaining connectivity across these heterogeneous wireless networks and provides quality of service (QoS) support. To provide QoS support to the application in the integrated network environment, the proposed architecture incorporates the procedures for activating a QoS session, the translation between network-specific QoS classifications, and network and session layer QoS support. We provide simulation results that show the viability and performance of the proposed QoS architecture

Architecture for 3G and 802.16 wireless networks integration with QoS support

SUMMARY Next Generation Network (NGN) is envisioned to be an inter-working environment of heterogeneous networks of wired and wireless access networks, PSTN, satellites, broadcasting, etc., all interconnected through the service provider’s IP backbone and the Internet. NGN uses multiple broadband, QoS-enabled transport technologies and servicerelated functions independent from underlying transport-related technologies. The operations and management of such interconnected networks are expected to be much more difficult and important than the traditional network environment. In this paper, we present an overview of the current status towards the management of NGN and discuss challenges in operating and managing NGN. We also present the operations and management requirements of NGN in accordance with the challenges. We then present standardization activities of NGN management and some of the notable research and development efforts related to NGN management.

Towards Management of Next Generation Networks

The proliferation and convergence of different types of wired, wireless and mobile networks (such as WiMAX, Wireless Mesh Networks, WPANs, WLANs, etc) and cellular-based networks are crucial for the success of next-generation networks. Traditional wired/wireless networks can hardly meet the requirements of future integrated-service networks which are expected to carry multimedia traffic with various quality of service (QoS) requirements. Therefore, it is necessary to develop efficient global control mechanisms that can maintain QoS requirements to maximize network resources utilization, and minimize operational costs on all the types of wireless mobile networks. In this paper, we present an overview of QoS paradigms for heterogeneous networks and focus on those based on deterministic and probabilistic QoS.

Quality of service models for heterogeneous networks: overview and challenges

Current trends in cellular telecommunications suggest the incorporation of Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) as supplementary access technologies into the existing cellular infrastructure. Overlay network architectures are expected to improve both service provision and resource utilization under the condition that sophisticated architectural options are followed. Many proposals suggest that all active connections be handled through the same access network technology. However, this is not believed to be efficient in a heterogeneous environment. Therefore, a mechanism that allows each connection of a terminal to be served by different radio access technology is introduced. Based on a tight coupling architecture for interworking between Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) and WLANs, the proposed scheme combines a sophisticated decision mechanism with flexible connection management in a way that ensures seamless service continuity during handover. The performance of the system is evaluated using a detailed simulation model and compared against existing architectures. Simulation results indicate an improvement in parameters such as connection and handover blocking probabilities, which justifies the enhancement in the overall usage of network resources when connections are handled separately.

3G interworking with WLAN QoS 802.11e

In this paper we analyze how well 3G traffic classes can survive with 802.11e's QoS properties, when packet sizes and channel error rates are varied. We try to find out the best packet size and channel error rate combinations for each 3G traffic classes by using different wireless and wired network configurations.

Providing QoS at the integrated WLAN and 3G environments

The IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) has been considered to be exclusive to big players of the telecommunication world. Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) has been standardized by IETF and solutions based on it have been in the market at least for a decade. It is also an essential part of the IMS, as it is the control protocol of IMS. Recent development of the Linux platform and the Open source IMS system has lead to a situation where the IMS is also an affordable solution for smaller telecommunication companies. The obvious question has been whether the level of performance with Open source IMS is really suitable for business usage. ETSI-TISPAN has unified IMS performance measurements by defining a common framework which to follow in measurements. The paper presents comparisons between IMS and SIP based networks in call and messaging performance. the Open IMS solution by the Fraunhover Focus Institute is compared with the OpenSIPS, an open source SIP server. The number of users in our measurements was chosen to be 100 000, a large enough number to be considered as a suitable number of users for small or moderate business usage needs. Our study shows that both of the systems are able to handle this many users and, in the case of OpenSIPS, with a clear margin. It was also discovered that both systems are reliable and are suitable for small and moderate business usage.

The invention allows binary class based control of a communications network and its services. A fault table and a state table are generated. The state table is compared with the state table in response to detecting a change in a state table entry. If the changed state table entry equals a corresponding fault table entry, an appropriate control action is determined and performed. The invention allows controlling a communications network, communications network resources, communications network services and services provided over the communications network significantly faster than prior art implementations.
