Synthesis of Refractory Materials by Skull Melting Technique

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors discuss methods of growing refractory oxide single crystals and synthesis of refractor glasses by skull melting technique in a cold crucible and point out some specific problems regarding the process of growing crystals by directional crystallization from the melt and by pulling on a seed from the melting.
Journal ArticleDOI

Phase composition, structure and mechanical properties of PSZ (partially stabilized zirconia) crystals as a function of stabilizing impurity content

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that the quantity of hardening (fracture toughness) is proportional to the content of the transformable t phase, and that increasing the stabilizing impurity concentration leads to an increase in the volume fraction of the “untransformable” phase.
Journal ArticleDOI

Structure and conductivity of yttria and scandia-doped zirconia crystals grown by skull melting

TL;DR: In this paper, a detailed study of the (ZrO2)1-x(Y2O3)x (x = 0.025 − 0.15), (zrO 2 1-x-y(Sc2O 3 )x (Y2 O 3 )y (x= 0.06 −0.11) and (ZnO 2 )1-y (Sc 2O 3)x( Y2 O3)y(Y 2 O 3 y)y (y=0.07 − 0 11; y = 0
Journal ArticleDOI

Partially stabilized zirconia single crystals: growth from the melt and investigation of the properties

TL;DR: In this article, the effects of composition and crystallization conditions on the microstructure and properties of PSZ crystals have been studied and the distribution of the ZrO 2 -Y 2 O 3 solid solution components was found to be uniform for (2-5-mol%)Y 2 -O 3 concentration range at 10-40mm/h growth rate range.
Journal ArticleDOI

Strength and fracture toughness of zirconia crystals

TL;DR: In this article, single crystals up to 40 mm wide and 120 mm long made of zirconia with yttria addition were investigated over the temperature range of −140 to 1400°C by the methods conventionally used for advanced ceramics.
