Journal ArticleDOI
The molecular bases of plant resistance and defense responses to aphid feeding: current status
C. Michael Smith,Elena V. Boyko +1 more
TL;DR: Recent studies into the differential expression of Pto‐ and Pti1‐like kinase genes in wheat plants resistant to the Russian wheat aphid provide evidence of the involvement of the Pto class of resistance genes in arthropod resistance.
Journal ArticleDOI
Molecular Basis of Plant Gene Expression During Aphid Invasion: Wheat Pto- and Pti-Like Sequences Are Involved in Interactions Between Wheat and Russian Wheat Aphid (Homoptera: Aphididae)
Elena V. Boyko,C. Michael Smith,Vankatappa K. Thara,Jon M. Bruno,Youping Deng,Sharon Starkey,Darsey L. Klaahsen +6 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that reductions in populations of D. noxia fed Dnx plants are related to the expression of sequences involved in defensive chemical production, cellular transport, and exocytosis, and maintenance of cell homeostasis.
Journal ArticleDOI
A high-density cytogenetic map of the Aegilops tauschii genome incorporating retrotransposons and defense-related genes: insights into cereal chromosome structure and function.
Elena V. Boyko,Ruslan Kalendar,Victor Korzun,John P. Fellers,Abraham B. Korol,Alan H. Schulman,Bikram S. Gill +6 more
TL;DR: A high-density integrated cytological and genetic map of the A. tauschii genome will be useful for breeding and genetics within the tribe Triticeae which besides bread wheat also includes barley and rye and a significant correlation between the physical density of markers and recombination rate was demonstrated.
Journal ArticleDOI
Inheritance and molecular mapping of new greenbug resistance genes in wheat germplasms derived from Aegilops tauschii
Lieceng Zhu,Charles Michael Smith,Allan K. Fritz,Elena V. Boyko,Priyamvada Voothuluru,Bikram S. Gill +5 more
TL;DR: The results indicate that the Gb genes in these germplasms are inherited as single dominant traits and Gbd appears to be a new greenbug resistance gene different from Gbx1 or Gbz.
Journal ArticleDOI
Categories of Resistance to Biotype I Greenbugs (Homoptera: Aphididae) in Wheat Lines Containing the Greenbug Resistance Genes Gbx and Gby
Dhanaraj Boina,Sheila Prabhakar,C. Michael Smith,Sharon Starkey,Lieceng Zhu,Elena V. Boyko,John C. Reese +6 more
TL;DR: Sando's 4040 and KS89WGRC4 provide useful new sources of resistance to greenbugs for wheat breeding programs, and tolerance to greenbug biotype I feeding damage.
