Journal ArticleDOI
GISQ, a multifunctional indicator of soil quality
TL;DR: In this paper, an indicator of soil quality that evaluates soil ecosystem services through a set of five subindicators, and further combines them into a single general Indicator of Soil Quality (GISQ) is presented.
Journal ArticleDOI
Soil ecosystem services and land use in the rapidly changing Orinoco River Basin of Colombia
Patrick Lavelle,Nubia E Rodríguez,Orlando Arguello,Jaime Bernal,César Botero,Paula Chaparro,Yolanda Gómez,Albert J. Gutiérrez,María del Pilar Hurtado,Sandra Patricia Loaiza,Sandra Xiomara Pullido,Edgar Rodríguez,Catalina Sanabria,Elena Velasquez,Steven J. Fonte +14 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors evaluated soil macro invertebrate communities and soil-based ecosystem services (climate regulation, hydrologic functions, soil stability provided by macro aggregation and nutrient provision potential) in four major production systems: improved pastures, annual crops (rice, corn and soy bean), oil palm and rubber plantations, and compared them to the original savanna.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ecosystem engineers in a self-organized soil: A review of concepts and future research questions
Patrick Lavelle,A. V. Spain,Manuel Blouin,George G. Brown,Thibaud Decaëns,Michel Grimaldi,José Juan Jimenez,Ddoyle Mckey,Jérôme Mathieu,Elena Velasquez,Anne Zangerlé +10 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors propose a conceptual framework for sustainable use of the soil resource and present seven general research questions whose resolution will provide a firmer base for the proposed conceptual framework.
Journal ArticleDOI
This ped is my ped: Visual separation and near infrared spectra allow determination of the origins of soil macroaggregates
Elena Velasquez,Céline Pelosi,Didier Brunet,Michel Grimaldi,Marlucia Bonifacio Martins,Ana Carolina Rendeiro,Edmundo Barrios,Patrick Lavelle +7 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the origin of aggregates separated according to visual criteria could be determined by comparing their specific organic matter signatures assessed by Near Infrared Spectrometry (NIRS) to signatures of biogenic structures produced by soil ecosystem engineers living in the same soil.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of plant diversity on plant biomass production and soil macrofauna in Amazonian pastures
Kam-Rigne Laossi,Sébastien Barot,Deurival Carvalho,Thierry Desjardins,Patrick Lavelle,Marlucia Bonifacio Martins,Danielle Mitja,Ana Carolina Rendeiro,Guillaume Xavier Rousseau,Max Sarrazin,Elena Velasquez,Michel Grimaldi +11 more
TL;DR: The results suggest that fauna density is affected by titter quality and that it is more affected by resource quantity than quality and the importance of nitrogen fixers to ecosystem function is confirmed.
