Journal ArticleDOI
Occurrence and levels of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in farmed and wild marine fish from Tanzania. A pilot study.
Eliezer Brown Mwakalapa,Aviti J. Mmochi,Mette Helen Bjørge Müller,Robinson H. Mdegela,Jan Ludvig Lyche,Anuschka Polder +5 more
TL;DR: The ratios of p,p'-DDE/p,p-DDT in wild milkfish and mullet from Mtwara and Pemba indicate historical use of DDT and in contrast, ratios in farmed milkfish from Unguja and MTwara, suggest recent use.
Journal ArticleDOI
Heavy metals in farmed and wild milkfish (Chanos chanos) and wild mullet (Mugil cephalus) along the coasts of Tanzania and associated health risk for humans and fish.
Eliezer Brown Mwakalapa,Chalumba Kachusi Simukoko,Aviti J. Mmochi,Robinson H. Mdegela,Vidar Berg,Mette Helen Bjørge Müller,Jan Ludvig Lyche,Anuschka Polder +7 more
TL;DR: The Pb concentrations exceeding ML in the fish suggests that Pb may affect the health of fish, and future investigations should include regular monitoring of heavy metals in farmed and wild fish in Tanzania for further development of sustainable aquaculture and the welfare of the wild fish stock in the coastal waters.
Journal ArticleDOI
Assessment of heavy metals in wild and farmed tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) on Lake Kariba, Zambia: implications for human and fish health.
Chalumba Kachusi Simukoko,Chalumba Kachusi Simukoko,Eliezer Brown Mwakalapa,Patricia Bwalya,Kaampwe Muzandu,Vidar Berg,Stephen Mutoloki,Anuschka Polder,Jan Ludvig Lyche +8 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors assess the levels of heavy metals in both wild and farmed tilapia on Lake Kariba in Zambia and evaluate the impact of intensive fish farming on wild tilapias.
Journal ArticleDOI
Spatial trends of chlorinated paraffins and dechloranes in air and soil in a tropical urban, suburban, and rural environment.
Maja Nipen,Rolf D. Vogt,Pernilla Bohlin-Nizzetto,Katrine Borgå,Eliezer Brown Mwakalapa,Anders Borgen,Susanne Jøntvedt Jørgensen,Samwel Moses Ntapanta,Aviti J. Mmochi,Martin Schlabach,Knut Breivik,Knut Breivik +11 more
TL;DR: In this article, the levels of chlorinated paraffins (CPs) and dechloranes in air and soil in rural, suburban, and urban regions in and around Dar es Salaam, Tanzania were investigated.
Journal ArticleDOI
Increasing Trends of Legacy and Emerging Organic Contaminants in a Dated Sediment Core From East-Africa
Maja Nipen,Rolf D. Vogt,Pernilla Bohlin-Nizzetto,Katrine Borgå,Eliezer Brown Mwakalapa,Anders Borgen,P. Schlabach,Guttorm Christensen,Aviti J. Mmochi,Knut Breivik +9 more
TL;DR: In this article , a dated sediment core covering six decades from a floodplain system in urban Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, was analyzed for selected legacy persistent organic pollutants (POPs) [polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated biphensyl ethers (PBDEs)] and chemicals of emerging concern (CECs)[alternative brominated flame retardants (aBFRs), chlorinated paraffins (CPs), and dechloranes].
