Journal ArticleDOI
Maternal perchlorate levels in women with borderline thyroid function during pregnancy and the cognitive development of their offspring: data from the Controlled Antenatal Thyroid Study.
Peter N. Taylor,Onyebuchi E. Okosieme,Rhian Murphy,Charlotte Hales,Elisabetta Chiusano,Aldo Maina,Mohamed Joomun,Jonathan P. Bestwick,Peter P.A. Smyth,Ruth Paradice,Sue Channon,Lewis E. Braverman,Colin M. Dayan,John Lazarus,Elizabeth N. Pearce +14 more
TL;DR: High-end maternal perchlorate levels in hypothyroid/hypothyroxinemic pregnant women have an adverse effect on offspring cognitive development, not affected by maternal levothyroxine therapy, and results require replication in additional studies, including in the euthyroid population.
Journal ArticleDOI
Polybrominated Diphenyl Ether Exposure and Thyroid Function Tests in North American Adults
Colleen M. Makey,Michael D. McClean,Lewis E. Braverman,Elizabeth N. Pearce,Xuemei He,Andreas Sjödin,Janice Weinberg,Thomas F. Webster +7 more
TL;DR: These results are consistent with those from animal studies showing that exposure to PBDEs is associated with a decrease in serum T4, and suggest that PBDE exposure might decrease the binding of T4 to serum T 4 binding proteins.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of Six Months of Daily Low-Dose Perchlorate Exposure on Thyroid Function in Healthy Volunteers
Lewis E. Braverman,Elizabeth N. Pearce,Xuemei He,Sam Pino,Mara Seeley,Barbara D. Beck,Barbarajean Magnani,Benjamin C. Blount,Anthony Firek +8 more
TL;DR: It is observed that a 6-month exposure to perchlorate at doses up to 3 mg/d had no effect on thyroid function, including inhibition of thyroid iodide uptake as well as serum levels of thyroid hormones, TSH, and Tg.
Journal ArticleDOI
Subclinical hypothyroidism, mood, and cognition in older adults: a review
Russell T. Joffe,Russell T. Joffe,Elizabeth N. Pearce,James V. Hennessey,Joseph J. Ryan,Robert S. Stern +5 more
TL;DR: A critical review of the literature on the mood and cognitive changes associated with subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH), with an emphasis on older adults, to evaluate the Consensus Statement on the management of SCH.
Journal ArticleDOI
Associations Between Maternal Thyroid Function in Pregnancy and Obstetric and Perinatal Outcomes.
TL;DR: Maternal serum TSH concentration >4mIU/L in pregnancy was associated with approximately 2-fold increased risks of prematurity and RDS in offspring and was not associated with preterm labor, placental abruption, cesarean section, gestational hypertension or diabetes, or neonatal intensive care unit admission.
