Journal ArticleDOI
Eutrophication and macroalgal blooms in temperate and tropical coastal waters: nutrient enrichment experiments with Ulva spp.
Mirta Teichberg,Sophia E. Fox,Ylva S. Olsen,Ivan Valiela,Paulina Martinetto,Oscar Iribarne,Elizabeti Yuriko Muto,Mônica Angélica Varella Petti,Thais Navajas Corbisier,Martín F. Soto-Jiménez,Federico Páez-Osuna,Paula Castro,Helena Freitas,Andreina Zitelli,Massimo Cardinaletti,Davide Tagliapietra +15 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors used a widespread macroalga often involved in blooms, Ulva spp., to investigate how supply of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), the two main potential growth-limiting nutrients, influence macroalgal growth in temperate and tropical coastal waters ranging from low-to high-nutrient supplies.
Journal ArticleDOI
Food resource utilization of the skates Rioraja agassizii (Müller & Henle, 1841) and Psammobatis extenta (Garman, 1913) on the continental shelf off Ubatuba, South-eastern Brazil
TL;DR: The results indicated that both species are benthic feeders, preying mainly on Crustacea, especially Amphipoda, Caridea and Brachyura, which seems to be associated with the availability of the prey, whose distribution and abundance are related to the dynamics of the water masses of the region.
Journal ArticleDOI
Use of isotopic signatures to assess the food web in a tropical shallow marine ecosystem of Southeastern Brazil
Thais Navajas Corbisier,Lucy Satiko Hashimoto Soares,Mônica Angélica Varella Petti,Elizabeti Yuriko Muto,M. H.C. Silva,James W. McClelland,Ivan Valiela +6 more
TL;DR: A dual isotope approach was used to assess the relative importance of terrestrial vegetation detritus and other primary producers in the trophic web of Flamengo Sound (Ubatuba, SP), SE Brazil, surrounded by the Atlantic Rain Forest.
Journal ArticleDOI
Biomagnification of mercury through the food web of the Santos continental shelf, subtropical Brazil
Elizabeti Yuriko Muto,Lucy Satiko Hashimoto Soares,Jorge E. S. Sarkis,Marcos Antonio Hortellani,Mônica Angélica Varela Petti,Thais Navajas Corbisier +5 more
TL;DR: Overall, the Hg concentration in fish was below the recommended limit for human consumption and the THg and δ 15 N were positively correlated in both food webs; however, the rate of biomagnification was higher and the basal Hg was lower in the pelagic food web.
Journal ArticleDOI
Demersal fish assemblages off São Sebastião, southeastern Brazil: structure and environmental conditioning factors (summer 1994)
Elizabeti Yuriko Muto,Lucy Satiko Hashimoto Soares,Carmen Lúcia del Bianco Rossi-Wongtschowski +2 more
TL;DR: The demersal fish community of the Channel and shelf of Sao Sebastiao (SP), on the southeastern Brazilian coast, was investigated during the summer of 1994 as mentioned in this paper, using a bottom otter trawl at 26 stations located between 8 m and 65 m in depth.
