Moves that matter: Issue selling and organizational change.

Adopting a narrative approach to resource acquisition research, we examine the effects of storytelling on a firm’s ability to secure capital. We argue that narratives help leverage resources by conveying a comprehensible identity for an entrepreneurial firm, elaborating the logic behind proposed means of exploiting opportunities and embedding entrepreneurial endeavors within broader discourses. Qualitative analyses of all 1996–2000 initial public offering prospectuses in three high-tech industries reveal how identity constructions, story elaboration, and contextual embedding are invoked within narratives. Our quantitative findings show how these aspects of an entrepreneurial narrative impact resource acquisition net of previously emphasized factors.

Do the stories they tell get them the money they need? the role of entrepreneurial narratives in resource acquisition

Given the rapid expansion of narrative approaches in management and organization theory in recent years, this paper investigates the contribution of this literature to the understanding of organizations and processes of organizing. The paper tells the story of the development of narrative approaches in organizational theory. Narrative's contribution to substantive areas of organization theory is evaluated. These developments are then reviewed in relation to an ongoing tension between story and science. We conclude by contemplating some of the criticisms, and the future, of narrative research.

When we made the decision, we had already made the decision. Corporate decision (?) maker Organizational decision theory and the research that supports it depend largely on narrative: the selective, ordered representation of events as told, the telling of this representation to others, and the successive retellings of this telling. To discover how anything happens in an organization, we ask people to tell us stories. To convince others that we know something about how things happen in organizations, we construct and tell stories about those stories. As others react to our stories, they tell stories about the stories we have told – and so on. Philosophers (Johnson, 1993; MacIntyre, 1981) argue that narrative is a meaning-making form and process that is central to human experience and conduct. “I can only answer the question ‘What am I to do?’ if I can answer the prior question, ‘Of what story or stories do I find myself a part?’” (MacIntyre, 1981, p. 216). Human conduct is by nature “storied” (Sarbin, 1986): We think, imagine, and choose according to narrative structures. We connect information – random or otherwise – to form patterns and plots. These patterns and plots produce meaning , defined here, according to the literary theory of narrative, as the excess of the “straightforward copy of events recounted” (Barthes, 1982, p. 289). In this chapter, I argue that narrative is a form of human understanding comparable to heuristics in decision theory (Kahneman, Slovic, & Tversky, 1982).

Business schools, which are at the forefront of teaching organizational change management, need to change themselves substantially. The prime intent of this reflection is to contribute to the improvement of business schools so that society as a whole is better able to deal with the complexities of today's world. The central argument consists of three main parts: (1) the intellectual content of business schools, (2) the mindset that business schools inculcate in their students and faculty, and the kinds of psychology that are taught in them, and finally, (3) the philosophical underpinnings of business schools. In brief, we are concerned with the intellectual, emotional, and philosophical foundations of business schools. We view them not only as highly interactive, but also as fundamentally inseparable.
