Introduction to Surface Chemistry and Catalysis

Development of efficient and economic water oxidation catalysts (WOCs) remains a crucial bottleneck on the way to artificial photosynthesis applications. Over the past few decades, WOC research has turned into a fascinating interdisciplinary field that ranges from bio-inspired molecular design over nanomaterials and thin films to solid materials tuning. Under the umbrella of WOC optimization, advanced in situ/operando analytical techniques are being developed as increasingly powerful tools to elucidate the controversial discussions about the molecular or nanoscale nature of many WOCs. More and more of these approaches also enable the monitoring of possible key intermediates as an essential prerequisite for proposing catalytic mechanisms. This review is organized in three main parts: first, recent highlights outline frontiers in WOC development, such as the benefits of connecting molecular WOCs with solids along with the introduction of molecular concepts into heterogeneous WOC research. Next, a brief overview of emerging in situ/operando approaches demonstrates new options for monitoring WOC transformations. Finally, selected monitoring studies over the entire WOC dimensionality spectrum illustrate interesting cases of catalytic border crossings as new input for WOC construction.

Frontiers of water oxidation: the quest for true catalysts

Controlled structural and compositional characteristic of visible light active ZnO/CuO photocatalyst for the degradation of organic pollutant

The use of perovskite materials as anion‐based intercalation pseudocapacitor electrodes has received significant attention in recent years. Notably, these materials, characterized by high oxygen vacancy concentrations, do not require high surface areas to achieve a high energy storage capacity as a result of the bulk intercalation mechanism. This study reports that reduced PrBaMn2O6–δ (r‐PBM), possessing a layered double perovskite structure, exhibits ultrahigh capacitance and functions as an excellent oxygen anion‐intercalation‐type electrode material for supercapacitors. Formation of the layered double perovskite structure, as facilitated by hydrogen treatment, is shown to significantly enhance the capacitance, with the resulting r‐PBM material demonstrating a very high gravimetric capacitance of 1034.8 F g−1 and an excellent volumetric capacitance of ≈2535.3 F cm−3 at a current density of 1 A g−1. The resultant formation of a double perovskite crystal oxide with a specific layered structure leads to the r‐PBM with a substantially higher oxygen diffusion rate and oxygen vacancy concentration. These superior characteristics show immense promise for their application as oxygen anion‐intercalation‐type electrodes in pseudocapacitors.

Highly Defective Layered Double Perovskite Oxide for Efficient Energy Storage via Reversible Pseudocapacitive Oxygen-Anion Intercalation

Transition-metal oxides with the perovskite structure are promising catalysts to promote the kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). To improve the activity and stability of these catalysts, a deeper understanding about the active site, the underlying reaction mechanism, and possible side reactions is necessary. We chose smooth epitaxial (100)-oriented La0.6Sr0.4MnO3 (LSMO) films grown on Nb:SrTiO3 (STNO) as a model electrode to investigate OER activity and stability using the rotating ring−disk electrode (RRDE) method. Careful electrochemical characterization of various films in the thickness range between 10 and 200 nm yields an OER activity of the epitaxial LSMO surface of 100 μA/cm2ox at 1.65 V vs RHE, which is among the highest reported for LSMO and close to (110)-oriented IrO2. Rotating Ring–Disk Electrode Study of Oxygen Evolution at a Perovskite Surface: Correlating Activity to Manganese Concentration

Studying catalysts in situ is of high interest for understanding their surface structure and electronic states in operation. Herein, we present a study of epitaxial manganite perovskite thin films (Pr1−xCaxMnO3) active for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) from electro-catalytic water splitting. X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) at the Mn L- and O K-edges, as well as X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) of the O 1s and Ca 2p states have been performed in ultra-high vacuum and in water vapor under positive applied bias at room temperature. It is shown that under the oxidizing conditions of the OER a reduced Mn2+ species is generated at the catalyst surface. The Mn valence shift is accompanied by the formation of surface oxygen vacancies. Annealing of the catalysts in O2 atmosphere at 120 °C restores the virgin surfaces.
