The traffic to be carried by today's European backbone networks increases very rapidly. An important portion of this traffic consists of data traffic (mainly IP-related). In the future data traffic is expected to become the abundantly dominant traffic type, while voice traffic will only account for a very small portion of the total traffic volume. In this paper, some network topologies for such a pan-European fiber-optic backbone network are presented (more details can be found in [1]). These topologies are compared in terms of the efficiency of the network design both from a cost and capacity point of view and in terms of the availability of the connections routed over this network. In order to be able to assess the network topologies under realistic circumstances, the expected traffic demand is forecasted. This enables to make the comparison for the current traffic volume as well as for the traffic patterns of the future. As not all types of (data) traffic require the same degree of survivability and in order to leverage the total capacity cost of the network design, a distinction is made between different recovery options in the optical layer for the different traffic types considered.

Pan-European optical transport networks: An availability-based comparison

On the way towards an architecture for a new QoS-supporting and scalable Internet, the IP-over-photonics approach seems to be very promising. One possible solution in this domain is optical burst switching (OBS), a concept combining advantages of optical circuit and packet switching. After an introduction to OBS as well as the reservation mechanism Just-Enough-Time (JET) we present an approximative analysis of the burst loss probability in an OBS node for an arbitrary number of service classes. Based on analytical and simulation results, we show the impact of traffic characteristics on service differentiation in a single node. Finally, we investigate service differentiation for various parameters in an OBS network scenario.

Energy Efficiency in integrated IT and optical network infrastructures: The GEYSERS approach

Worldwide operator deployment of high-speed 100G coherent optical networks is currently underway. To ensure a competitive solution offering significant performance improvements to cope with the ever-increasing traffic demand, a novel network concept has been proposed for improved resource utilization based on “elasticity”; specifically, the ability to make a number of previously fixed transmission parameters tunable, for example optical data rate or channel spacing. The benefits are numerous, including increased network capacity, lower cost per bit, and improved energy efficiency and scalability. In this paper, we review the work carried out within the Cooperation for a Sustained European Leadership in Telecommunications (CELTIC) Elastic-Optical NETwork (EO-Net) project towards advancing the state of software-configurable optical networking. We identify the key building blocks for enabling elastic optical networks to provide desired performance improvements over static optical networks. We examine the design of elastic transponders capable of data rate adaptation, interfaces between client packet devices and transponders supporting flexible traffic aggregation, and associated algorithms for traffic grooming and routing. We also perform network cost/energy analyses. Finally, we review the experimental demonstration of such elastic functionalities.

Elastic optical networks: The global evolution to software configurable optical networks

This paper reports the main results obtained in the framework of the COST239 project on the implementation of transparent optical network schemes to connect main European cities. The investigation on transmission limitations has shown that transmission systems, for which 1662:5 Gbit/s WDM systems are used due to traf®c reasons, have a maximum range shorter than 1000 km. This condition does not allow a completely transparent network. Two solutions, the partitioned and the gridconnected network architecture, are proposed, described, and compared in the paper.
