Journal ArticleDOI
Investigation of serum BDNF levels in drug-naive patients with schizophrenia
Emmanouil Rizos,Ioannis Rontos,Efstathios Laskos,G. Arsenis,Panagiota Michalopoulou,D. Vasilopoulos,Rossetos Gournellis,Lefteris Lykouras +7 more
TL;DR: The findings indicate that BDNF levels at the onset of schizophrenia may reflect associated pathophysiological processes as well as the severity of positive and negative psychotic symptoms.
Journal ArticleDOI
Reduced serum BDNF levels in patients with chronic schizophrenic disorder in relapse, who were treated with typical or atypical antipsychotics
Emmanouil Rizos,Athanasia Papadopoulou,Efstathios Laskos,Panagiota Michalopoulou,Anastasia N. Kastania,Dimitrios Vasilopoulos,Konstantinos Katsafouros,Lefteris Lykouras +7 more
TL;DR: The findings may indicate a differential effect of olanzapine on BDNF levels compared to haloperidol, risperidone, and amisulpride, and the possible differential effects of treatment with typical and atypical antipsychotics on serumBDNF levels in the same group of patients.
Journal ArticleDOI
Medical education challenges and innovations during COVID-19 pandemic.
Michail Papapanou,Eleni Routsi,Konstantinos Tsamakis,Lampros Fotis,Georgios Marinos,Irene Lidoriki,Marianna Karamanou,Theodore G. Papaioannou,Dimitrios Tsiptsios,Nikolaos Smyrnis,Emmanouil Rizos,Dimitrios Schizas +11 more
TL;DR: The COVID-19 pandemic has had serious implications on the lives of medical students including their psychological well-being and the impact on their academic trajectories, and the urgency for rapid and novel adaptations to the new circumstances has functioned as a springboard for remarkable innovations in medical education, including the promotion of a more "evidence-based" approach as discussed by the authors.
Journal ArticleDOI
Neurological manifestations of long-COVID syndrome: a narrative review
Maria-Ioanna Stefanou,Lina Palaiodimou,Eleni Bakola,Nikolaos Smyrnis,Maria Papadopoulou,George P. Paraskevas,Emmanouil Rizos,Eleni Boutati,Nikolaos Grigoriadis,Christos Krogias,Sotirios Giannopoulos,Sotirios Tsiodras,Mina Gaga,Georgios Tsivgoulis +13 more
TL;DR: This narrative review seeks to present a comprehensive overview of current understanding of clinical features, risk factors, and pathophysiological processes of neurological ‘long-COVID’ sequelae, and proposes diagnostic and therapeutic algorithms that may aid in the prompt recognition and management of underlying causes of neurological symptoms that persist beyond the resolution of acute COVID-19.
Journal ArticleDOI
Association of serum BDNF levels with hippocampal volumes in first psychotic episode drug-naive schizophrenic patients
Emmanouil Rizos,Matilda Papathanasiou,Panagiota Michalopoulou,Panagiota Michalopoulou,A. Mazioti,Athanassios Douzenis,Anastasia N. Kastania,P. Nikolaidou,Efstathios Laskos,Konstantina Vasilopoulou,Lefteris Lykouras +10 more
TL;DR: It is found that hippocampal volume (HV) was decreased in FEP patients, and low serum BDNF levels are associated with reduction in HV at the onset of schizophrenia, which may further support the theory of a neuroprogressive-neurotoxic reaction associated with the start of psychosis.
