The aim of this study was to test the effect of agricultural and forestry land use on the structure of mayfly assemblages in low-order streams. Twenty-nine headwater streams were investigated in the state of Sao Paulo. We analyzed 15 streams in pristine areas (mixed tropical rainforest, semideciduous forest and dense tropical rainforest), and 14 streams covered with sugarcane, eucalyptus and pasture. Mayfly richness obtained by rarefaction curves was higher in pristine areas (21 genera), especially in mixed and semideciduous forest when compared to land use (9 genera), where values were particularly low in sugarcane plantation (3 genera). The non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) ordination showed clear difference in mayfly assemblages between land uses and pristine areas, supported by analysis of similarity (R=0.67, p=0.001). In partial redundancy analysis (pRDA), the environmental descriptors that best explained differences in assemblage structure were Riparian, Channel and Environmental Inventory (RCE) index score, percentage of fine sediment stream substrate, water pH and land elevation. Our results show that agricultural and forestry land use has a strong negative effect on the structure of mayfly assemblages. These results also support the use of mayflies as environmental indicators, as some genera were sensitive to changes in land use, while others responded to naturally occurring changes in the study area.

Effect of land use on mayfly assemblages structure in Neotropical headwater streams

The Brazilian mountain ranges from the Guiana Shield highlands are largely unexplored, with an understudied herpetofauna. Here the amphibian and reptile species diversity of the remote Serra da Mocidade mountain range, located in extreme northern Brazil, is reported upon, and biogeographical affinities and taxonomic highlights are discussed. A 22-days expedition to this mountain range was undertaken during which specimens were sampled at four distinct altitudinal levels (600, 960, 1,060 and 1,365 m above sea level) using six complementary methods. Specimens were identified through an integrated approach that considered morphological, bioacoustical, and molecular analyses. Fifty-one species (23 amphibians and 28 reptiles) were found, a comparable richness to other mountain ranges in the region. The recorded assemblage showed a mixed compositional influence from assemblages typical of other mountain ranges and lowland forest habitats in the region. Most of the taxa occupying the Serra da Mocidade mountain range are typical of the Guiana Shield or widely distributed in the Amazon. Extensions of known distribution ranges and candidate undescribed taxa are also recorded. This is the first herpetofaunal expedition that accessed the higher altitudinal levels of this mountain range, contributing to the basic knowledge of these groups in remote areas.

Integrative overview of the herpetofauna from Serra da Mocidade, a granitic mountain range in northern Brazil.

Baetidae (Insecta, Ephemeroptera) from Roraima, Brazil: new records and a key to genera and species at nymphal stage. Roraima is one of the Brazilian states where least is known regarding the family Baetidae; to date only four species have been recorded from the state. The aim of the present study is to improve knowledge of the family in Roraima based on collections that are mainly from northeastern and southeastern portions of the state. Thirty-two species were found; of this total, 14 are new records for the entire Northern Region of Brazil, and four species are new for the country (Camelobaetidius ortizi Dominique & Thomas, 2002, Cloeodes barituensis Nieto & Richard, 2008, Paracloeodes pacawara Nieto & Salles, 2006 and Waltzoyphius roberti Thomas & Peru, 2002). Except for Moribaetis Waltz & McCafferty, 1985, Tomedontus Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, 1995, Tupiara Salles, Lugo-Ortiz, Da-Silva & Francischetti, 2003 and Varipes Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, 1998, all of the remaining genera that had been recorded from Brazil were found. One genus and one Cryptonympha species were found to be new to science.

Baetidae (Insecta, Ephemeroptera) ocorrentes em Roraima, Brasil: novos registros e chaves para gêneros e espécies no estágio ninfal

Aiming to present a survey of Ephemeroptera fauna of Ephemeroptera from Mato Grosso State we investigated mayfly nymphs mainly from two hydrographic basins located in the eastern area of the state. Sixty-seven species/morphospecies in 41 genera and eight families were encountered. Four species (Cloeodes redactus Waltz & McCafferty, 1987 and Waltzoyphius roberti Thomas & Peru, 2002 [Baetidae], Tricorytopsis chiriguano Molineri, 2001 [Leptohyphidae] and Microphlebia surinamensis Savage & Peters, 1983 [Leptophlebiidae]) are recorded for the first time from Brazil. The families Euthyplociidae, Polymitarcyidae and Coryphoridae are recorded for the first time from Mato Grosso, as well as 19 genera and 18 species. Twenty-five species could not be identified due to the lack of knowledge regarding the nymphal stage of their respective genera. As demonstrated in others surveys of mayflies in Brazil, the order is much more diverse than currently recognized, especially if we consider that several physiognomies and hydrographic basins of the state remain undocumented.

Ephemeroptera (Insecta) ocorrentes no leste do Estado do Mato Grosso, Brasil

The first list of the species of Ephemeroptera from Pernambuco State, Northeastern Brazil, is presented. The survey was based on collections from numerous rivers and streams of 17 counties. A total of five families, 28 genera, and 38 species were recorded, including 22 genera and 31 species newly recorded from Pernambuco State. Moreover, Farrodes tepui Dominguez, Molineri & Peters, 1996, Lisetta ernsti Thomas & Dominique, 2005, and Simothraulopsis (Maculognathus) sabalo Kluge, 2007 are recorded for the first time to Brazil.

Ephemeroptera (Insecta) from Pernambuco State, northeastern Brazil

In the present work based on material from several areas in Brazil, the species of Americabaetis represented in the country are revised. A new species, A. mecistognathus, sp. nov., is described based on nymphs from Santa Catarina, the male adult of A. labiosus Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty is described, a key to the nymphs of the South American species is provided, whereas comments regarding the taxonomy and habitat distribution of the Brazilian species are presented.

The genus Americabaetis Kluge (Ephemeroptera: Baetidae) in Brazil: new species, stage description, and key to nymphs

The Serra da Mocidade National Park is a conservation area located in one of the most inaccessible portions of Amazonia Biome in the Roraima State. The first survey of aquatic insects from that in this region was undertaken in January to February 2016 and we present a checklist of eight species of the Leptophlebiidae (Ephemeroptera) found in the Park and describe three new species of Miroculis based on male imagos.

The first studies of Leptophlebiidae in the Santa Catarina State, Southern Brazil, dated from 1920. Since then, not much is known about the family (even to the Order Ephemeroptera) to the State. The main goal of this study was to survey fauna of Leptophlebiidae in the Santa Catarina State based on nymphs. The material was obtained from the collection deposited at the Laboratorio de Pesquisa em Ecologia e Quimica of the Universidade Comunitaria da Regiao de Chapeco, besides additional specimens collected between 2008 and 2009. Occurrences were plotted in the hydrograph map of Santa Catarina State, with one map for each genus. The Leptophlebiidae nymphs were recorded in 26 aquatic environments that included small streams and rivers. We identified 24 morphotypes distributed in 12 genera. Number of genera in the Western of Santa Catarina increased from eight to 15. Thraulodes, Ulmeritoides and Homothraulus presented higher frequency of occurrence in the region. Leentvaaria and Hermanella were associated to regions well conserved such as in the Araucaria forest. Needhamella and Segesta were related mainly to Irani River.

A new species of Miroculis Edmunds, 1963 (Ephemeroptera: Leptophlebiidae) from Cerrado-Amazonian forest transition zone, Brazil

Gioas State is located in the Central Region of Brazil belonging to a massive area of the Cerrado biome. The knowledge of Ephemeroptera in Goias is limited by few derived from punctual collections. As result of a survey in 25 sample sites of Goias, I present a taxonomic contribution of Ephemeroptera from the State. From the total of 830 specimens collected, 21 genera and 25 species were recorded.
