Applications of ionic liquids in the chemical industry

Nanomaterials (NMs) have gained prominence in technological advancements due to their tunable physical, chemical and biological properties with enhanced performance over their bulk counterparts. NMs are categorized depending on their size, composition, shape, and origin. The ability to predict the unique properties of NMs increases the value of each classification. Due to increased growth of production of NMs and their industrial applications, issues relating to toxicity are inevitable. The aim of this review is to compare synthetic (engineered) and naturally occurring nanoparticles (NPs) and nanostructured materials (NSMs) to identify their nanoscale properties and to define the specific knowledge gaps related to the risk assessment of NPs and NSMs in the environment. The review presents an overview of the history and classifications of NMs and gives an overview of the various sources of NPs and NSMs, from natural to synthetic, and their toxic effects towards mammalian cells and tissue. Additionally, the types of toxic reactions associated with NPs and NSMs and the regulations implemented by different countries to reduce the associated risks are also discussed.

Structure and nanostructure in ionic liquids.

Sustainability, industrial ecology, eco-efficiency, and green chemistry are directing the development of the next generation of materials, products, and processes. Biodegradable plastics and biocompatible composites generated from renewable biomass feedstock are regarded as promising materials that could replace synthetic polymers and reduce global dependence on fossil fuel sources.1 It is estimated that the world is currently consuming petroleum at a rate 100 000 times faster than nature can replace it.2 The growing global environmental awareness and societal concern, high rate of depletion of petroleum resources, concepts of sustainability, and new environmental regulations have triggered the search for new products and processes that are more compatible with the environment. The most abundant natural polymer in our environment is cellulose. It has an estimated annual biosphere production of 90 × 109 metric tons and, consequently, represents the most obvious renewable resource for producing biocomposites.3 Its highly ordered structure is responsible for its desirable mechanical properties but makes it a challenge to find suitable solvents for its dissolution.4 The first attempts to dissolve cellulose date back to the early 1920s.5 Several aqueous and nonaqueous cellulose solvents have been discovered since then, but all of these solvents suffer either from high environmental toxicity or from insufficient solvation power.6 In general, the traditional cellulose dissolution processes require relatively harsh conditions and the use of expensive and uncommon solvents, which usually cannot be recovered after the process.6-10 However, a new class of solvents was opened to the cellulose research community, when in 2002 Swatloski et al. reported the use of an ionic liquid as solvent for cellulose both for the regeneration of cellulose and for the chemical modification of the polysaccharide.7 In 1934, Graenacher had discovered a solvent system with the ability to dissolve cellulose, but this was thought to be of little practical value at the time.11,12 Ionic liquids are a group of salts that exist as liquids at relatively low temperatures (<100 °C). They have many attractive properties, including chemical and thermal stability, nonflammability, and immeasurably low vapor pressure.12 First discovered in 1914 by Walden, their huge potential in industry and research was only realized within the last few decades.13,14 This review aims to provide a summary of our current state of knowledge on the structural features of wood * To whom correspondence should be addressed. Ionic Liquids and Their Interaction with Cellulose

The use of liquid metals based on gallium for soft and stretchable electronics is discussed. This emerging class of electronics is motivated, in part, by the new opportunities that arise from devices that have mechanical properties similar to those encountered in the human experience, such as skin, tissue, textiles, and clothing. These types of electronics (e.g., wearable or implantable electronics, sensors for soft robotics, e-skin) must operate during deformation. Liquid metals are compelling materials for these applications because, in principle, they are infinitely deformable while retaining metallic conductivity. Liquid metals have been used for stretchable wires and interconnects, reconfigurable antennas, soft sensors, self-healing circuits, and conformal electrodes. In contrast to Hg, liquid metals based on gallium have low toxicity and essentially no vapor pressure and are therefore considered safe to handle. Whereas most liquids bead up to minimize surface energy, the presence of a surface oxide on these metals makes it possible to pattern them into useful shapes using a variety of techniques, including fluidic injection and 3D printing. In addition to forming excellent conductors, these metals can be used actively to form memory devices, sensors, and diodes that are completely built from soft materials. The properties of these materials, their applications within soft and stretchable electronics, and future opportunities and challenges are considered.

Stretchable and Soft Electronics using Liquid Metals.

A feasibility study is under way for a space telescope capable of observing objects 100 to 1,000 times fainter than those accessible to the next generation space telescope, the James Webb Space Telescope. The instrument that is yet to come is the Lunar Liquid Mirror Telescope, based on a 20- to 100-metre mirror consisting of a spinning liquid. The infrared is particularly important for observations of the early Universe, and for this a mirror temperature of below 130 K is required. This part of the project is feasible, the latest studies suggest. By coating an ionic liquid with silver, a smooth, stable surface is obtained. In its current form the lens is liquid down to 175 K, but a melting point below 130 K should be attainable in time. The successful coating of an ionic liquid with silver, where the surface is smooth and the silver coating is stable on a timescale of months, is reported. The ionic liquid does not evaporate in a vacuum and remains liquid down to a temperature of 175 K. The synthesis of liquids with melting points  7. The apparent simplicity and low mass of a liquid mirror telescope, compared with a traditional pointable glass mirror, suggest that the concept should be considered further. A previously proposed liquid mirror telescope, based upon a spinning liquid metallic alloy2, is not appropriate for infrared applications, which will require a liquid below 130 K. Here we report the successful coating of an ionic liquid with silver. The surface is smooth and the silver coating is stable on a timescale of months. The underlying ionic liquid does not evaporate in a vacuum and remains liquid down to a temperature of 175 K. Given that there are ∼106 simple and ∼1018 ternary ionic liquids, it should be possible to synthesize liquids with even lower melting temperatures.

Deposition of metal films on an ionic liquid as a basis for a lunar telescope

This paper discusses an innovative low-cost deformable mirror made of a magnetic liquid (ferrofluid) whose surface is actuated by an hexagonal array of small current carrying coils. Predicted and experimental performances of a 37-actuator ferrofluid deformable mirror are presented along with wavefront correction examples. We show the validity of the model used to compute the actuators currents to obtain a desired wavefront shape. We demonstrate that the ferrofluid deformable mirror can correct a 11 µm low order aberrated wavefront to a residual RMS error of 0.05 µm corresponding to a Strehl ratio of 0.82.

In this paper we demonstrate how Bessel beam interferometry can be used to characterize the curvature of a reflecting surface. The approach is based on the fact that the intensity distribution produced by the coherent superposition of Bessel beams is a sensitive function of the relative phases between the constituting beams. We show how this phase sensitivity can translate into accurate measurements of the curvature of a wavefront. Experimental tests were made with a liquid mirror. We have also used Bessel beams to measure the precession angle of the liquid mirror. Our results show that Bessel beam interferometry is a very accurate tool for the optical testing of non-stationary surfaces and that it could be used as a general method of real-time, non-contact sensing. Bessel beam interferometry has the advantage of not requiring any reference arm that needs to be stabilized.

Optical tests with Bessel beam interferometry

We have undertaken work to determine whether optical quality liquid mirrors are technologically feasible. We have built a testing facility, equipped with a scatterplate interferometer interfaced with a CCD for data acquisition and a microcomputer for data analysis. Extensive interferometric tests of a 1.5 m diameter f/2 liquid mirror show that it is diffraction limited as they give Strehl ratios of order 0.8 and rms surface deviations of order λ/20. Direct observations of the point spread function show that the mirror does not suffer an excessive amount of scattered light

Liquid Mirrors: Optical Shop Tests and Contributions to the Technology

Stable ferrofluids composed of positively charged magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles coated with 2-[2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxy]acetic acid (MOEEAA) are prepared in ethylene glycol. These new ferrofluids exhibit a magnetic response that is equivalent to that found for corresponding citrate stabilized particles. Unlike the uncoated positively charged particles, nanoparticles coated with MOEEAA and dispersed in ethylene glycol remained stable in the presence of a magnetic field. Infrared spectra indicate that surface grafting occurs through the terminal carboxylate group which is bound to the iron oxide nanoparticles both through bridging and unidentate structures. A surface grafting density of 1.2 molecules/nm2 is determined from thermogravimetry measurements. Although MOEEAA functionalization increases the stability of nanoparticle suspensions in ethylene glycol, surface charge is also essential for the prevention of particle agglomeration.
