TL;DR: The main mechanisms underlying their cardioprotective effects have been attributed to improvement in cardiac cell metabolism, improvement in ventricular loading conditions, inhibition of the Na+/H+ exchange in the myocardial cells, alteration in adipokines and cytokines production, as well as reduction of cardiac cells necrosis and cardiac fibrosis.

TL;DR: In a random nationwide sample of the adult population in Greece the majority of subjects with self-reported DM had type 2 DM, and most patients with type 2 were treated with OAD, while almost half of insulin naive subjects were skeptical towards insulin initiation.
