Journal ArticleDOI
Genetic and biochemical analyses of the Pseudomonas aeruginosa Psl exopolysaccharide reveal overlapping roles for polysaccharide synthesis enzymes in Psl and LPS production.
Matthew S. Byrd,Irina Sadovskaya,Evgueny Vinogradov,Haiping Lu,April B. Sprinkle,Stephen H. Richardson,Luyan Z. Ma,Brad Ralston,Matthew R. Parsek,Erin M. Anderson,Joseph S. Lam,Daniel J. Wozniak +11 more
TL;DR: It is revealed that 11 psl genes, pslACDEFGHIJKL, are required for Psl production and surface attachment and the first structural analysis of the psl‐dependent polysaccharide, which consists of a repeating pentasaccharide containing d‐mannose, d‐glucose and l‐rhamnose.
Journal ArticleDOI
Extracellular Carbohydrate-Containing Polymers of a Model Biofilm-Producing Strain, Staphylococcus epidermidis RP62A
Irina Sadovskaya,Evgueny Vinogradov,Sigrid Flahaut,Grigorij Kogan,Grigorij Kogan,Saïd Jabbouri +5 more
TL;DR: An improved procedure for preparation of PIA is presented that conserves its labile substituents and avoids contamination with by-products and concludes that PIA from S. epidermidis is structurally identical to the recently described poly-β-(1→6)-N-acetylglucosamine from PS/A-overproducing strain S. aureus MN8m.
Journal ArticleDOI
Structural elucidation of the extracellular and cell-wall teichoic acids of Staphylococcus epidermidis RP62A, a reference biofilm-positive strain.
TL;DR: D-Alanyl acylation of a sugar hydroxyl group seems to be a novel structural feature of teichoic acids from staphylococci.
Journal ArticleDOI
Lipooligosaccharide of Campylobacter jejuni SIMILARITY WITH MULTIPLE TYPES OF MAMMALIAN GLYCANS BEYOND GANGLIOSIDES
R. Scott Houliston,Evgueny Vinogradov,Monika Dzieciatkowska,Jianjun Li,Frank St. Michael,Marie-France Karwaski,Denis Brochu,Harold C. Jarrell,Craig T. Parker,Nobuhiro Yuki,Robert E. Mandrell,Michel Gilbert +11 more
TL;DR: It is confirmed that this pathogen is capable of synthesizing a much broader spectrum of host glycolipid/glycoprotein mimics within its LOS, and that the sialyltransferase CstII and the galactosyl transferase CgtD are involved in the synthesis of multiple mimic types.
Journal ArticleDOI
Structural elucidation of the extracellular and cell-wall teichoic acids of Staphylococcus aureus MN8m, a biofilm forming strain.
TL;DR: The structure of the extracellular and cell wall teichoic acids of the Staphylococcus aureus MN8m strain was studied by NMR spectroscopy and capillary electrophoresis-mass spectrometry and found to be a mixture of two polymers.
